View Full Version : how to stealth floppy drive???
i've scoured the forums in search of a decent guide on stealthing floppy drives, but to no avail...
the only thing i could find was, in my opinion, terrible (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/nitech/lian%20case/floppy2/index.htm)...this site had no instructions and hardly any pictures...pictures arent that important if one can put together a good instruction manual...
does anyone know of a site for (or for that matter, care to share their experience on) stealthing floppy drives??
i ordered my lian li pc-6083a today and i would really like to be able to stealth all of my drives...
if i cant find a decent article, or nobody knows how, i guess i'll have to patch one together using that sorry excuse for a how-to guide i posted above...
help would be appreciated!

I havn't come across any worthy enough myself..Your best bet is to face your floppy drive inward and save your self the hastle..
not a bad idea considering how often i use my floppy...
if i cant find (or come up with) anything decent, i'll do just that

I would say either face the floppy inside, or make a hinge-like cover for it. Just a flat face, then a small hinge to fold it upward when you want to use the floppy.

do u even need a floppy?
i dont really need em, only thing good for is flashing the bios
its just one more cable and power thing to plug in and make neat for good air flow
i say when u want to use it , power down
pull it out of stoarge plug it in with side panel off
when your done , unplug it

Heh, you could mount the floppy in the back, so that way the slot for the floppy is in the back right around wehre all your other ports are...
You could also create a nice aluminum hinged door to go on the front of the case if you wanted to hide all your drives. But you'd probably have to make a whole new front for the case if you wanted the door to be flush and leave the buttons/leds open.
Could be fun... :)

It doesnt seem much to stealthing it at all.
1)He took an old floppy drive cover and snip the top and bottom parts of the panel (marked in Blue).
2)Then he drilled holes into the horizontal parts of the panel in order to stick the wiring for the hinge (marked in red).
3) Then he just taped it to the back board (marked in Yellow).
4) Then just measure and test out the length and distance for the floppy and you should be set.
The only part I cant figure out is how to open it but Iguess you could just press the bottom left corner and it should eject it
I dont know if thats enough and Ive never had the pleasure of working on a Lian Li, but his work doesnt look to hard to follow.
If you want the same picture without the paint marks go
here (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/nitech/lian%20case/case.htm)
this page has a better shot of the guys handy work.
Hope that helps you.
[edit] Maybe you should try some whiskey that seems to help him think of his mods

The bay covers on the Lian cases pop off easily from the front when you pop the bezel off... you could recess your drive way back and insert the bay cover like normal in front of it. Then when needed you just pop the cover off.
The reason I do this is that I don't like opening my side panel because of the side fans wiring. Its all hidden and I don't like screwing it up.

Don't know if anyone's tried this yet, but here goes...
I'm at work, so I don't have the luxury of a digital camera, so I'm just going to try and give a detailed explanation. How about turning one of the 5.25" drives into a hinged door, that hangs from a rod. Then adding a spring that holds it in place. Set the 3.5" back far enough that the door won't hit it when you press it in. Does that sound feasable? If you want to get really creative, make a slot on the side of the case, that slides the 5.25" faceplate out of the side to reveal the floppy drive. You could cover it with a spring hinged door, and make it pop out with a button. If you have any questions on this, please post them, as I know this is hard to understand without pics.

i'd hafta agree with adam... just chuck the thing. my computers all don't have a floppy drive. why? haven't used one in years. only reason i'd ever need it is for a bootdisk, but most os's come with bootable cd's now. no need for em. and besides... they look way too retro and ghetto. nobody likes an ugly pc. :)

ive had an idea about how to do this for a while...
ok ill try to explain
ok on most televisions and vcrs they have extra buttons but they cover them up with a little door that swings down, usually they are spring loaded and have one of those latches that works like this; you push on the little door and it opens then when you are done you push it shut and it stays shut...
well bas*erdize one of those (or at least the idea) and mount the latches to the front of the floppy drive recess the drive itno th ase a bit and there ya go you have a stealthed floppy drive
