View Full Version : Ideas for more exposure for our team
This was originally posted in the new challenge graph thread, but I thought it might not get noticed there by many.

We have had more new members join lately and with the recent push to have SETI related avatars I am hopefull that that will also help increase our new member rate. I'm also sure that everyone who can is going to be continuing to improve production. Hopefull the combination of these (plus working with our contests) will give us the needed increases to continuing moving up in the top 25.
We can all also keep thinking of new ways to entice new members from new sources as well! :D
Cy
One thing I did recently was to link my name on the SETI@home website to the ocsetiteam website.
I noticed that of our top 20 members only 11 have any link attached to their names and of those only 3 (Cy, Landshark and Jon) have links (at least ones that are easy to see right away) to the ocsetiteam website (these guys have links within a link, I just linked directly, but either way is good).
This could be a very good way to advertise our team, especially if you are near the top of your registration class. The link shows up when you look at the registration class. I know I tend to check out the links of the guys near the top when I look at a registration class. Who wouldn't want to be on a team near the top with a guy in his registration class who is near the top! ;)
p.s. Just to be fair, rogerdugans at 22 and FRANK at 27 also have links to ocsetiteam, and I'm sure others do too. ;)
Excellent suggestion! :)
This type of thing has always seemed rather obvious to me (hence I had already done it and created an avatar as well). My personal view is that if I'm on a team then I need to be proud of that team and advertise it! I know people like to play with their avatars and customize them and change them often but its not to hard to make a simple animation to include a brief mention of our team.
As always, everyone is able to participate at whatever level they want. This is good but I hope ideas like this just help to raise awareness that there is something that could be done that maybe you had not heard/thought of yet. As these ideas build up (hey, maybe a special sticky to place ideas?) our team members can pick and choose which ones to use. In the end we still end up with more exposure and more new members. :)
Cy
I got an email from Skip on advertising banner ads on Forums and CPU DataBase. He says it's $300./month. I asked him if that was for non-profit Seti too. I haven't heard back yet.
I can afford one week. Maybe if members like seeing our banner ad more will contribute.
Also think that making an entry in the CPU data base for each of our wu benchmarks with a link to Landshark's benchmark page might generate some traffic.
Harvey
Buying some banner time would be nice but is a fair bunch of money, especially for any one person. I know we all want to grow and improve but we don't want to be a burden as a team to anyone. Seeing that banner would be really sweet! But, it does not help anyone actually crunch any more/faster. :/
Its a personal decision. Not to try and stir anything up but I would not mind if there were two places I could occassionally donate money for the team. One for contests and one for other expenses (domain upkeep, the occassional banner add etc.). Just some thoughts. :)

Who's in charge of accepting donations? Could someone post an email address for paypal contibutions?

There is a link at the bottom of the main page to make dontaions directly to skip.
Cy- If all the team members signed up for PayPal and contributed their $5. sign up bonus to the Team that would be a bunch of money. It actually doubles because the sponser gets a $5. referral bonus too which goes to the team budget.

Hmmm.... is that for the whole o/c website? I was actually refering to contributions for the ocsetiteam raffle and other ocsetiteam specific interests.

well thats different.. ;)
I believe TC is in charge of that
I was thinking about the banner, skip is the one for that.
unless we make a collection and give it to him in 1 lump.
I believe TC has been handling the donations for the first contest. We could consider taking a few names that we could vote on to become the team treasurer? Again, we would not want any given duty to become an undue burden. We also don't want to create such a complex setup that other negative issues arise. Good topic for discussion I would think. :)
Cy
OC- A banner ad has to produce members that produce wu's otherwise it's just a waste of money.
As I type this I'm looking at Folding@Home Team 32. It's there but I don't know if it makes we want to join.
A banner ad could be great for communications changing it when something special is happening.
Lots of possibilities, who know maybe we have an adverstising executive here who is alos an OC'er.
Got to run and buy a new PSU before the store closes.
Talk more later.

there's a donation page in the middle of our team site under Links that u could donate to.
i think the link is like www.ocsetiteam.com/other/links.htm
and as for more exposure, first, i would suggestion all our member to AT LEAST included some sort of message into their avatar to help promote the team. check another thread from reddeathdrinker, he's making customer modified avatar for team members!!! or if u like, u can also use Cy's team ranking avatar that he made for the members!! or, let us know how u like it, we could blend 2 into 1. like mine (my old avatar <logo> and Cy's team ranking one), and the one i've made for Lonewolf (again, Cy's ranking one w/ a AthlonXP logo which he was using at the time). it's highly recommended for all our members.
second, banner time is certainly a help. $300 could be 2 cruncher their already!! and may be we could individually donate some (be it a dollar or ten dollars) to make it happen. yeah, we might just able to get a month's worth. but consider the front page and the forum's hit, there's a good chance to pick up a few new members (who knows, may be another Hallen, GregM, etc.)
also, as KenCo suggested, a link in the forum's sig and/or from SETI's user profile would be a very nice way to advertise the team too! especially this one mostly is veiwing by other SETI addict!! they might be crunch alone and there's come a new member w/ could be a good amount of WUs w/ him!!
Crunch On, Everyone!!!!

Every little bit is going to help. and looking at the other teams were going to need it..
I personally have like the idea of the banner since the start. i think it s a better investment than the raffle, but they both have there pros and cons.
Kenco has a very good idea.. The hardest part is remembering you password :D
if we all do a little something it will add up.
I suppose we can do both the raffle and the banner if we can raise the money. I was taking the donations for the raffle, but I would also like to see a team elected to handle the drawing and give it an air of credibility.

A banner would be nice, but that's a little pricey.
Why don't we keep an eye on the "HOME" page where it shows the names of new members when they join the forum and send them a PM or email and ask them to join our SETI team. No cost in doing that and getting invited personally may be attractive to a newbie....you know, like making a new friend type thing. That way we don't have to wait for them to stumble into the SETI FORUM or a thread.
Just my idea. :D

Sure Dagwood, what a wonderful idea! And should I pose in a red bikini or in a short, tight party dress with 5 inch platform heels? And while we're at it, why don't I just stand in front of a PC real bimbo like looking with text over my head that says "excuse me, which of these buttons turns the computer on?"

No, I've never priced advertising.
I'll just keep asking people to join when I can. That's free. Some times I can be a real cheapo. :p

Where is this 17 mil figure coming from? I mean Anandtech doesn't get that many unique page views on its entire site per month. Last I heard they were the king (hardware wise) and had about 500K per week. I could maybe see this happening if counting every hit on every page from the same source unlimited times.

Sigh, the Forums do 15 Million impressions a month each impression is a new page served, hence a new banner ad, the CPU Database does 2 Million impressions a month hence since advertising on the Forums would get you the CPU database that equals out to 17 Million Impressions a month.

i dont think the banner ad would be worth it personally. reddeath is already going strong with with the seti avatars... thats all the free banner ads we need. i really can say i never look at the banner ad at the top, i dont even remember what the f@h one looks like. I mean think about it, if us as a team managed to get together 300 bucks a month that right there is about what you would spend on a xp system for a diskless cluster, thats about 6 WU's a day. it would be smarter to just buy more rigs than try to make some banner ad attract new people. i think the seti avatars and the pm/emailing new members thing are good ideas though. if we PM all the new people we wouldnt need a banner ad anyhow. just my thoughts

A good start is your avatar and sig.
Something as simple as posting the team URL in your sig, or updating your avatar (hell, use your cutrrent one, I'll add a little "SETI something" to it!)
Get all your relatives involved (get them to crunch under your name for more WU!)
Link to the team page wherever you get the chance.......

How I got to be a Seti addict
by Harvey Allen
1) Found overclockers.com and started using the database to calculate overclock possibilities.
2) Started picking up goodies in the overclockers.com classifieds.
3) Signed up for the Forums when the classifieds were moved here.
4) Found out about Seti while making my 100 post requirement for access to the classifieds.
5) Sitting here in a room full of computers cruncing Seti beside a Wal Mart fan trying to keep things cool.
Conclusion:
I) People who frequent the database are likely heavy hitters.
II) Seti gives people something to do with their MHz.
III) Seti is a lot of fun here on the team.
IV) Members here are smart technically and are happy to share their knowledge to make you a better computer user.
Having said that, the idea is to get people from 1) above to 5) above so they can enjoy the benefits of I) to IV).
A good banner ad telling people that using Seti on their brand new state of the art Intel or AMD computer is an adventure that they are missing can jump them from 1) to 5) or at least get them to click onto a page where we can explain the merits of SETI and "The Overclockers.com Seti Team" in detail.
$300. bucks a month does not seem like too much if it can do the trick.
JMHO
Harvey
edit: We also have our own database and that is an asset too that can be used to interest potential members.

Ok, how about your wife, girlfriend, or mom pose next to me and have the text abover her head then?
Specifically addressing the banner issue I would be happy if we started a fund for that and people can just contribute as they desire. When it reaches the needed level we can place a banner (design issues come up of course).
If this is once a year fine. If it is more than once a year fine. Pretty much win/win to me. No muss, no fuss, no pressure and just keep doing what everyone is doing to crunch harder/faster/better! :D
If after placing an add we feel that there was no benefit we can always decide not to place anymore. If there are left-over funds just move them to the contest account. Its our team and we can try things out and see what works.
We have lots of good ideas and discussions going, lets keep it up! :)
Cy
I'll start out with one week $75.
Katelin could you handle the money? All you need to do is open up a PayPal account for members to pay into.
We can let the fund build while we work on the details.
Maybe a sticky with contribution links and an update on the amount in the account.
If we don't advertise we can always PayPal back.
Harvey
edit: August has 31 days. Figure 30 x $10. = $300. If we can do it that's like one day free.

Hey my newly overclocked girlfriend (now fiance :D ) siad she'd do it.. Maybe we can make a woman of seti calander.
Maybe the women of Seti will start the their own team and beat the men of Seti.:D
This is a very rough idea of what I would like to try. The rest is up to the copy on the click on.

One more point that hasn't been discussed here but was made during the similar discussion phase of the "Folding Team's" decision to do an ad(yes, I do spy on them for recruiting ideas), is the fact that not only does the ad have potential benefits for our team, but the $300.00 is going to help support the very place that this team is founded on.
I for one, think that is a pretty good way to get double "BANG" for the buck. I pledge $75.00 to the Team Advertising Budget. Let me know when and to who to PayPal it to. There now, we're half way there or better.
SkyHook
Very good point indeed. :) Yes, as soon as we have the spot to donate for a banner I'll send a little something along as well.

Great Guys and Gals.
I forgot to add that you get 3 different banners to display so people aren't looking at the same one all month.

count me in for another 1/4, $75!!
i really do like the idea of banner for more team exposure and also helping out the team's origin, OC.com.
i would agree w/ Harvey also that most people who visit the OC.com & the data base is in search of performance! and w/ their highly o/c'ed killer machine, wouldn't they like to see how their machine compare to others (hint: competition, and sometimes, show off, is human's nature!!). direct them to this highly competitive and friendly team is a good way we could try.
may be something like: "You think yours are fast? Let's see whose fastest to SETI@Home!"
direct them to the benchmark database. and if they did run the benchie, which most likely since even for u, if u just built a brand new machine, wouldn't u interested 'bout how ur newly killer rig compare to others? at least we r 2/3 the way through already 'cos they already install the client into their machine!! then direct them to this forum and we might be able to keep them interested 'bout SETI@Home and keep on crunching too......
JMHO too.......
Shark- Benchmark page is a valuable introduction to the Team.
How about a one click membership and a one click Express benchmark download?
One last thought, PayPay grabs a fee from the pot.
From our classifieds (FS XP 1600+ @ 1.73GHz $74. shipped) I found out that Citibank is free.

Just thought I'd point out that the banner should be able to bring in more than one new member a month. Even if 5 people join because of the banner who have XP or P4 systems, woudn't their output be greater than the 1 XP system we could build?
Also there's the chance of any of those new members "getting the seti bug" and buying even more systems. :)

you took that out of context. when you consider that quote plus the points that i brought up about the banner ad not working, then you see that i said this because i feel that 6 WU's is better than no WU's.

I like the idea of the banner if we can succed into rising the funds to handle it, but considering the traffic we got with the latest contest (the now unused new team header) and the succes of the OC stickers,I would like to propose the *****COUGH****(insert dumroll here) OC SETI Team badge (sticker - official logo)*****COUGH*****
For all who have been here for some time, we have been cooking this idea (wel roasting, carbonizing , :)) for quite some time. When the header contest was published in the GDF it attracted quite a lot of new guys into the team, so I still think this is a good idea.....any comments about this?

The point of the stickers was to prote it by getting a contest to select the sticker. I have been cooking some ideas for the logo but so far I haven't had the time to get down and make 'em. One of the first proposals was using the logo made by Cy (my avatar is a modification of it made by eboard).....so if we can get the contest going I think a lot of the guys with some graphic design skills might get intersted in the contest and possibly join us in our cause of total domination.....:D
