Hey jdmcnudgent , well "working on it " meant ...... my factory cooler was still installed (installing AX-478 as we speak) and still "playing" with some bios settings to try and get 3K out my chip. I did hit 2898 out of the gate with the chip (with stock cooler) , but have yet been able to get 3K out of it . So..... "still working on it" (heh-heh) ;) .

so you finally got it, i remember you've always been saying that you can't wait to get it, and now you finally got it. Congrats. I also want it, but i've spent too much money on my current rig. I just sold some of my non-computer stuff on ebay and have about $400. I might get a p4t533, and sell my cpu and then get a 2.26b. However, 256MB of ram wont cut it, so i'll wait for samsung to come out with their 512MB pc4200 chip. Hopefully they overclock better since it's a 32bit chip now and you only need 1. We'll see. Plus i wanna get it in raid so i can stripe for better performance.

CONGRATS ON THE OC.

If you pin wire wrapped the P4 it probably isnt in the socket the entire way

I had the same problem

Prior to closing the latch have to press down on the chip on all four corners then hold it down in the middle while latching - after latching check the corners of the cpu to make sure they are tightly down

Man fellas...that is bogus. I tought in my "Vapochill Mod (remove heat pads)" that I was pretty specific when I said I was just replacing the heat elemnet with silicone. I did'nt say anything about getting rid of the closed foam pad that goes ontop of it. My rig is running night and day without the two (top & bottom) elements. And no condensation what so ever. I even used a laser temp probe that I borrowed from my buddie to see if there were any cold spots that would allow condensation to develop and the coldest spot was 72f and that was the back of the mobo tray. Man Pacino I feel for ya bro. If I had known you were gonna go for it I woulda warned ya, cause if i remember right I pm'ed jdmcnugent about remembering to use the foam ontop of the silicone.:(

Hey Krag, Well, I kinda ran without my back heating element for over a week with no probs, it was too humid here for the past 2 days and I guess this is what caused it .. never had any probs with my older 2.2 chip tho' .. oh well, thanks bro anyhow :)

08-04-02, 06:04 PM
if you have the silicone, what do you need the foam pad for also?

krag
08-04-02, 06:15 PM
Extra protection/insulation. The article at "octools.com" says you don't need it but I am glad I put it on my rig. If the silicone layer does get below ambient temps, then its lights out. The extra insulation insures no condensation.

jdmcnudgent
08-04-02, 06:16 PM
so what should i do since my layer is sooo thick?

krag
08-04-02, 06:23 PM
On my rig I layed it on kinda thick and put the foam peice ontop of it. It was a tight fit, actually it is so tight my mobo bulges a little bit in the middle even after I cinch down the screws. I think the idea is to completly fill the space between your silicone and the back of the mobo tray. I bet if Pacino had this space filled he wouldn't of had any condensation. But, this is just my opinion and I have no actuall tests or experiments to really draw from.

Hey bro, if I were you I would trimm a peice of foam to fit back there, better safe than sorry.

Hey omniskillz, I would clean both with alcohol, make them shinny baby! hehehe .. That hole is a no damage at all dont'cha worry about it :)

Not hard, just cool. My Asus does pretty well, but I wonder if it is holding back my cpu. Cause both of you guys have beat my best stable oc by quite a bit. Pacino had his chip up to 3.2g and you jd had yours (if I remeber right) almost that far. I am just re-thinking my mobo choice.

Errr...JD,
You can RMA a chip that was fried from OCing? I thought you could only RMA if it was DOA or died w/o breaching warranty.

Another oc'er from Atlanta. Out by Six Flags I am. You are right on the correct reason to RMA. Overclockers does not support fraudulent RMA's. Careful consideration must be made prior to oc'ing and care must be taken while doing so. People who do so carelessly often end up with bad results and some do not wish to take the blame for their own actions. Those lacking in ethics believe that their bad choices should be paid for by the companies and in return by you and I. The logic wherein I and others here must pay for the lack of skill on some peoples part astounds me even to this day. Take Care and here is to properly raised OC'ers.:)

all i know is the chip worked, and i put it aside, then i put it in my new mobo, and the thing would not start. it doesnt matter anyway, intel will inspect and test the chip and if i am not elegible, then they will send it back to me and let me know the reason, but it doesnt hurt to try.

Hey bro, I am having trouble with my rig. It has shut down three times now. It says that a certain windows file is missing (I can't remember the exact name) and to put the original cD in and choose "R" for repair. But when I re-boot I am able to go into windows no-problem. Am I soffering from "Data Corruption" due to my high oc? My rig is running at what5 my sig says. Help me , help me, heeeelllpppp!

JD I think I found out why yor chip may have died! Condasation in the IHS.

_____

Crude drawing but the raised partion of the botton line(chip) woud be tuching the top line(the IHS) and beside it would be where condsation would form. Do you think that was it?

I thought that was vacum sealed. There shouldn't be any water vapor in there. By the way, I just lost a P4 2.26b also. Do you have any links or any other info on this?

Man bro...I'm not sure. I really don't think it has anything to do with my vapo mod. Because I scoped out my whole rig for 4 days with a laser temp probe that I borrowed from my friend and I couldn't find any cold spote anywhere. The coldest spot was 72f and there is no way condensation will develop on that. I didn't even have my voltage up very high 95% of the time it was at 1.6v the rest of the 5% at 1.65v just before it died. I am kind of suspicious of the electromigration theory. I read an article about this happening at high volts due to the extra thin traces in the new P4's. I am wondering if the same could happen with high frequencies?

pacino
08-06-02, 09:52 PM
Oh Man :( .. who's next? .. ME? .. I truly don't think condensation either, otherwise, your mobo would've been fried too .. how about PSU? .. power surge? .. this is weirdo tho', how could it die just like that? .. bah :argue:

Well...now that you mention it, I did have my Enermax 431 modded so that my 5v and 3.3v rails were nice and high. 5 floats around 5.12 to 5.26 and the 3 runs at 3.6 to 3.8. I wonder if that had anything to do with it?

Do you think that was it? no, with the goop you put on the top of the cpu, it repels it. now krag, maybe, cause he had no heating element on the top of the socket, and you need to have that, as for it would heat up any condensation that would be coming toward the cpu.:(

Yeah maybe you're right, when my new one comes in I will put the top heating element back on. I wonder if the pelt boys are having similar probs?

It was just a guess but someone said there was a small hole in the IHS that he was worried about getting AS3 in until someone told him it woulden't be a problem. I also thought that by looking at the glue that it wasen't all of the way around. Again it was just speculation and I hope that that wasen't the reason.

Could be, I honestly don't think it's the CPU fault, something else happened there, but I can't really tell... Hmmm wanna know something funny? .. my rig just locked up .. and now no post .. grrrrrrrrrrrr .. WTF is happening! .. it's on AIR @ default vcore & everything awaiting my BD7II .. OMG, this can't just happen to me :( .. I'll clean the cpu and re-seat it .. hopefully it'll boot! .. it's all your fault Krag LOL!

PS. This is on Asus P4B533 .. Does it ring the bell?

Yes and no, depends on your cooling system.. IMO, if you're on AIRcooling .. then yes, your theory is right.. I think northy's don't like cold bathing for a while... at least the new ones, my older 2.2A runing @ 3.2Ghz with 1.92v was strong @ sin for more than 5 months .. until I decided to sell and get 2.26... I think I made a mistake

.. in simple English, if you want 3ghz and over, DDR is king. If you don't mine the 100mhz+ less than a 3giger with a huge memory bandwidth, RDRAM is queen :)

Pacino, u read my post wrong. I said in simple english up in the nieghboorhood of 180FSB RDRAM 1066 is King. It doesnt matter CPU speed im referring to FSB. That ram with a 2.26 at 17x180FSB=3060mhz 18x180fsb=3240mhz and so on. So that still doesnt mean DDR is king of the 3ghz hill. But if u are lucky enough to pump out 200FSB out of a chip then the RDRAM will have 1 heck of a time keeping it stable. We can probably assume it wont get much higher then 185FSB stable for RDRAM. SO that is y we agreed that for a insane FSB like 200 u will need to go DDR.;)

I only refered that thread cause you guys discussed it already. But in my opinion, with RDRAM, you have to be one lucky O/Cer to get 170 even .. RDRAM proven to be picky with certain boards and brands .. never heard of any on DDR .. I might be wrong, but I'm just talking from a personal experience :)

I myself havent had best luck with it either. But the 1066 seems to be more promissing. Yes but u have to be 1 lucky dude to get 200fsb too. I think its safe to say that 1066rdr will get u pretty good FSB and all the mem bandwidth u need.
Im also waiting to see the double DDR. From the looks of things DDR wont get faded out for a long time.;)
