I know that since I have started folding two weeks ago I am at a point now where I am answering many questions as to what folding is and trying to recruite new folders here and as well as friends. But what about those of us that are getting folditis?

First it starts as "Hey, I think I will try this out."

Second "Man this is kinda cool...but I am folding so slow"

Then is sets in....."How ca ca can I ma make more folders" spend ma money....build..hu.,csioonw....wuwuwuwuwu.

I cannot help myself. I am folding almost a 30 points a day now and I cannot fill my desire for more. I must fold!

Does anyone else get this feeling:D Maybe it's just me.

It's when you have Newegg's Refurb page open at all times to check for killer deals for yet ANOTHER Folder.

BTW, I should be getting my 2 refurb 8K3A+ any minute now. :)

I have actually been wondering a lot about when the project is done. How many proteins are ther to be analysed? How long time will that take? I guess nobody really knows, but can someone give an estimated year (?) when the Folding project is finished?

I don't think folding will be finished for years. There are literally millions of proteins - enzymes, antibodies, sturctural proteins, haemoglobin.... the list is endless.

And I don't imagine that at the end of it it will be a case of 'righty-ho, we're finished' and thousands of Terahertz of computing power dissolves into other projects. Once the cuurent projects are finished then newer studies will be brought in to utilise the thousands of computers that Stanford now has running their software.

My wife has already tried the slapping technic...to no avail.:D

No1...You can have one of my rigs to fold....If you trade my for one of yours....I figure maybe a 650Mhz for a 1.2 or so.
What do ya think;)

I have tried the lamaze breating and it gets my heart rate down to about 150 bpm. Thanks No1.:D

when i read that i was like "fold-it-is, wtf?? " lol then i got it...well its going to be around for a long while unless everyone starts getting like 20 rigs...then it will be a lot sooner...but either way have fun with it while its around...lol im looking for a new rig myself...i guess i have a little better sence of reality then most of you though lol

The project is just getting started. The first step is to try to accurately fold proteins using computers. All of the proteins we have been folding over the last few years have structures that have been determined by other means (usually x-ray scattering or NMR.) At the current state of the project, the data analysis consists of comparing the results of the simulation to nature to see if the computer is accurate (unfortunately, it frequently isn't.) The next step will be to fold proteins for which the structure hasn't been determined. Then the structures of these proteins will be found and compared to the computer. If at this stage the simulation results are still reliable, then computers will be used to predict protein structures for use in medical research. These algorithms can also be used to determine if/how two given proteins interact. I should stress that currently we are folding protein fragments. The average protein is about 400 amino acids long and the smallest proteins are about 80-100 long. The fragments we are folding are 50 amino acids long at most (probably closer to 20.) The project will not be able to move on to the next stage until the algorithm is efficient enough to fold full sized proteins. I think we can safely assume that there is a least 20 more years of interesting research for this project.
