View Full Version : need quick answer
Hi,
Just finished unlocking my athlon.. almost..
Almost because whenever I try to change the multplier, it won't POST.. but if I set the multiplier to it's default (10.5 for an xp1600) no problem..
So what I did was to keep resetting the bios..
Have I actually locked my xp at 10.5?
So would the best way be to clean up all the bridges and try again?
WELCOME TO THE FORUMS!!!
What did you use to unlock your chip with? Defogger paint can be taken off with fingernail polish remover...conductive grease with Isopropyl alcohol...sounds to me like you have a trace or two touching. Just clean it off and try again, no harm done...good luck!
hi..
thanks for welcoming me! :)
Anyway i used nail polish to fill up the bridges.. and I'm using conductive paint for connecting the contacts... I'm probably gonna use nail polish remover again..arrggjj
thanks anyway :) will try now and see what happens :)

Welcome to the Forums!!!
Here is a slightly risky alternative:
use a fresh razor knife blade to carefully clean between the bridges.
I did this on one of my earlier unlocks and it worked fine- the risk is that you do NOT want to penetrate the surface of the chip....

I'll second this! I DID end up penetrating the surface on one of my chips exposing metal underneath.... Say bye-bye to trying to unlock it now! After 10 unsuccessful tries of trying to microscopically avoid touching that metal, I gave up on it. :(
nope.. doesn't work for me.. just tried it...but it just won't post.. :( I guess it's time to RMA... I think I did a pretty good job of cleaning up the pits... even smearing some AS 3 all over. sparingly of course.. gonna play noobs and see whether they can do anything.
noiw using spare T-bird 850.. and boy is it slow :)
hmm just realised that my post doesn't sound that logical.. anyway what I meant was that I cleaned out the bridges and pits to make it seem "unaltered" . then smear as3 all over to make it seem like a noobie's job...
if they don'tchange it, then I guess it's time for a new t-breed.. heehee heard it's much easier to unlock it! :)

I'm afraid I'm with takiwa on this one, man.
There are risks involved in modifying anything, and if you can't accept them, maybe you shouldn't do it.
Accepting the risk means accepting the consequences.
I toasted a couple of XP chips recently, and it sucks- because I do NOT have the funds to replace them right now. But I overclocked them and I ran them in volt-modded mobos- so I have to pay the price.
My opinion.

First off welcome to the Forum!:D
I am not meaning to lambast you, but I think that it is a little shady to botch a unlock job and try to screw newegg with the dead CPU. Maybe you should try again.
We love newegg here and by doing things like this you just raise the prices for all of us. If you are going to "modify" your parts, take heart that if it doesn't go right, it is your fault not the place were you bought it.
I think it would be pretty obvious to newegg as well when the received it with as3 smeared all over the L1 bridges. I am sure they get this type of thing all the time.
Hi guys..
Yup I agree with all of you... but don't worry I didn't buy it from newegg.. I bought it from my local shop, and they even provide unlocking services themselves for the athlons and p4s... so I'll just go speak to them and see how it goes...
Of course I paid a much higher price for my agoga 1600.. $30 more in fact... but then it was worth it..
well, before I was attempting to unlock it I knew the consequences.. so that's why I purposely bought my chip from them.. If I was not going to o/c it, I would have gone straight to xp 2100 and it would've have cost about the same elsewhere..
The condition was that I must make it seem "noob" before I send it for RMA.. which they will do..
so don't worry guys.. I understand your concerns.. I've actually toasted a few other athlons trying to see how much o/c can be done using passive cooling... results were not that good.. but I didn't rma them, cos I bought them from another place..
Ok this might seem funny right?? But onl;y a few of us are entitled to this... cos we're regular customers of this shop, and we also do review stuff for them from time to time.. that's why I got this privilege..
Final note, the "warranty" is provided by the shop, not by AMd.. so it will not affect the other consumers..
hope this clears up everything@

Thanks for the follow up information melly. I am glad you understand our concerns here. OC is a great source for overclockers of all levels and we are glad you joined the club :D
hey no worries..
I understand how you guys feel.. cos I do see people that blatantly do RMAs when they know they're not supposed to in the other forums where I'm a regular..
maybe I wasn't very clear when I posted my message.. cos you know how frustrating it is... then you just write out a message as quick as you can! :)
Anyway thanks for being so friendly, I will visit this forum very very often now..
anyway, I'm gonna bring it back to that shop later, and gonna buy another xp1600.. hope they have good core steppings this time! :) hahah..
ok got a new agoia y at my local shop...
multiplier unlocked...
:) easy does it it.. hahah steady hands too

Great stepping. You should be able to get 1.8 GHz with good air cooling.
