hello everybody.

i need a amd system for a friend and id like asking you the help to put together a value one with not so new components since i cannot find most of it available here.
i need only the components inside the case and i want no suggestion for case and peripheals such as monitor, speakers etc. my friend says he has no intention to overclock it but i hope i can still to persuade him on this.

then i will give you a value to make things easier: US$ 600.

thanks a lot for your attention!

Epox 8k3a mobo $80 @ mwave
XP 1800 $80 @ tcwo
2x 256mb Crucial PC2100 DDR $130 @ googlegear
eVGA GF4 Ti4200 vid card $135 @ newegg
Western Digital 40.0gb hdd $72 @ nexthardwareshop
Silent 420w TTGI PS $50 @ directron
Lite-On 16x DVD-ROM $36 @ nexthardwareshop
Lite-On 32x12x40 CD-RW $54 @ nexthardwareshop

Total comes to $637 (a little over the limit, I know). The retailers I've listed are all retailers with whom I have done business with and trust.

Why not stick to one vendor? I see no need going to buy Epox as it is a stock board and those boards are just good in quality for oveclocking, in this case no overclocking will be involved. But before that your in brasil, so I'll try to keep it as low as possible.

Mobo: Shuttle AK31A
Chip: Athlon XP 1800+
Memory: 256mb/512mb Crucial PC2100
Video Card: Abit Siluro TI4200 64MB DDR
HDD: Maxtor 40-80gig Silent Drive
PSU: Antec 430watt True Power

Those are the main I'll list, your missing probably PCI Cards if you want them, CD-Rom drives, keyboards etc if it's from a scratch system ;)

I suggested the Epox b/c it's a good board and in case he succeeds in convincing his friend to OC, he'll have a board that gives him plenty of options. But it's a good amount of extra money though.

Epox boards are not stable at all. i know from experience (8kha+, 8k3a+, and their Slot A mobo which was the worst thing i have ever used).

Get the Abit KX7-333
Amd 2200+ or 1600+ depending on cash
Corsair XMS 2700 3000 or 3200 depending on how high you want to oc
Thermalright AX7 and 40cfm fan (for 1600+) or 50cfm fan (for 2200+ or good ocin of the 1600)
etc

What can't the Shuttle do at stock that the Abit can? He said stock. . . By doing that you save cash since Corsair is expensive. IMHO I don't think overclocking for a friend is a good idea, he'll probably accuse you if anything is wrong in the future and bug you alot, and you'll most likely be replacing whatever is wrong.

the abit has support for 2700 ram the shuttle does not. also the shuttle ak31's northbridge fan has been notorious to die.

Simple, change it when you get it. A 40mm fan is like 5USD. What use is the PC2700 when he's running stock. The 4:3 divider doesn't do much either..
