I have a PNY ti4600 gf4 video card that when I overclock it I get lower mad onion scores. I have a copper cooling fan and heat sinks for the card and it runs stable overclocked. Help, why??

thanks Gary

how much you are talking about, how high did you overclock it and how much did the score drop?

I went to 315/700 it runs good but my score dropped about 15 to 20 points. it seems to get the best scores at stock or not much more.

I also get better scores at stock speed or with just a really mild OC.

Try rasing your card just 10/25 and see what you get.
You can see my scores in my sig.

im not sure here but could this have anything to do with the voltage ? maybe your card needs some more juice :D

I have a mate with the same problem, he went up over 100Mz on the memory and over 30Mz on the gpu and ended up with a lower score. I also had the same problem once i went over 310 on the gpu and 620 on the memory i also dropped on score. BUT from the defalt setting to 300 (gpu) and 605 (mem) i have an crease of over 1000 points.
My mate has an ASUS gf4Ti4600.

Yes I found that over 310 and the memory as you stated is about the best score. My next Question is how do you mess with the voltage of the video card as someone sugested?

i remembered reading about the poor overclock potential of the 4600 series but then i searched a bit at the x-bit labs articles and found out that:

"The reason is that the nominal frequencies of the graphics chip and memory are close to the top frequencies, which are determined by the chips architecture and manufacturing technology. It's no use even to hope for a good overclocking potential in such circumstances."

you can read some of the "extreme overclock" articles of the 4600 and youll noticed that the overclock potential of the cards actually is not any good. the most important thing about this is not about not reaching high frequencies but not getting much of a performance improvement with them as high.

I tend to agree just from my messing arround with othercards i have had. I think they maxed out this chip. well almost!

Thanks for the imput,

Gary:cry:

Actually, this can be an issue with ANY GPU. I've experienced the same on my GF2 GTS as well as a GF1. It's not just limited to 3dMark either.

I believe that what happens is that when you push the core too far, it starts getting errors and has to recalculate some things, thus slowing it down. Similar to how if your dial up modem connects too fast for the line conditions, you will get slower performance because it has to retransmit a lot of stuff.

I'm not certain that's why it does it, but that's the only reasonable explanation I could come up with.

Maybe... But i hope not... are the ASUS cards just no good?
My card is also an ASUS.:eh?:

See my previous post. It's not just the ASUS cards. The issue has been noted before in some vid card overclocking issues I've seen too. Lord knows I couldn't tell you where. It's been a couple of years.

some stability issues are not visible on your screen (background instructions) and corupt information will make the GPU reprocces or loose the information causeing significant slowdowns.
