take off the pink thermal pad

In the past I have always taken off the pink pad on the heatsink, and used thermal grease. Is there any benefit to leaving it on?

Everything I've ever read about a heatsink coming with thermal tape said it should be removed and replaced with thermal grease, or, better yet, arctic silver.
