Coldplate nessesary ?

Hi all
I was wondering if the coldplate is really necessary , can a peltier not be mounted to the cpu die directly??

It's because the cpu die is so small that the thermal coupling isn't good. With the cold plate the entire cooling surface of the peltier is providing cooling to the cold plate, rather than a small portion to the cpu die.
