View Full Version : I upgraded to Windows XP and now my floppy drive doesn't work.
First it was my sound card. Now it's my floppy drive. I have a panasonic JU-256A216P floppy drive that will not work properly under windows xp. Do floppies need drivers? I haven't been able to find them. Anyone know what I can do here? I would appreciate the help. It worked just fine with windows 98se. Thanks
tacos, do u know if other ppl with the same board have also get the issues you say? maybe a new bios revision is supposed to fix things you are getting.
as for the floppy, all you need is the OS to detect the floppy controller on the mainboard, then it will install everything needed. the floppy only need the controller working to run properly. make sure you can boot from a floppy disk. windows should detect the controller if you can.

I've had problems like that, only to find that it was because I had been in the case moving something, and had bumped the cable loose. Double check everything, and maybe even try the drive in a different machine to be sure it works. I've never heard of XP having floppy drive issues, but there is a first time for everything. Let us know what you find.
I had the same problem with a pc. The floppy was recognized in win98/NT/Win2k, but not with XP. My machine had old bios and I did a bios upgrade, didn't help. Basically your bios in conjuction with xp isn't supported. Question for you, can you live without a floppy? Nowdays floppies are not used much. Most software installs are on cd's.

You could probably get an external for uber-cheap.
And floppy drives rock. They're great for moving small stuff, like text, to another machine. Burning CDs takes too long.
A lot of older motherboards don't support xp. I've had an older motherboard where i was having trouble with it, so i upgraded the bios (bios upgrade was specifically made to add support for xp), and it fixed the problem up. Check out your motherboards manufacturer to see if they have a bios upgrade that'll support communication between your hardware and xp.

my computer didn't read my floppy in XP either. i flashed teh BIOS to the newest version and then it worked fine
I contacted Gateway tech support and they told me that in order to update my bios I had to save all the contents from the gateway update page to a floppy. Then in order to flash my bios it would have to be done using this floppy with the bios update at the restart. The problem is my floppy doesn't work so that I can do this.
if the floppy used to work under w98 then you prolly can boot from it.
set it as the first boot source and try it out.

i was able to plug in a friend's working floppy to read some files, but for some reason my floppy wouldn't work. if that doesn't work and you have network access send them over from another computer

If you know someone with internet access, use their computer to download the bios update and save to disk. If this freind has a win98 pc, then create a startup disk as well. (or you can go to bootdisk.com and download a boot image from there if they don't have 98/95)
Start your comp with a boot disk, then insert bios flash disk and run the ruotine. Don't forget to save the current bios version, if you are prompted to do so.

I don't understand. Why should I use windows 98 bootdisk? I'm using windows xp pro. Anyways I finally borrowed my cousin's floppy drive. I downloaded the bios update for my board. Saved all the files to my floppy disk. Inserted the floppy and rebooted.
Now my problem is I can't get the Bios to flash. How do I update the bios? On the startup It just goes thru the same startup sequence. Thanks

The 98 startup disc has basic DOS on it, and you need to be in DOS to flash your BIOS. It doesn't matter if you use a 98 disk, or a MS DOS bootable disk from XP, as long as you are in DOS. I think what you need to do now is go into your BIOS settings, and set your floppy as first boot device. More detailed BIOS flash instructions here (http://forums.oc-forums.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=92578) .
Let us know how it goes.
Ok Thanks! I will let you know what happens!
Ok. What if I just go buy a new floppy drive. Do you guys think it will work. I absoultly can't get my bios to update and I can't get my floppy to work.

If you can't get it to work to flash, that isn't because of XP. Does the light come on at all? If you set the BIOS to "Seek Floppy Drive", does it make that drive noise on boot? Does it show up in your BIOS?

Try this, take the floppy cable off the drive and turn it the other way.
