Hey guys.

I just picked up a Sanyo Denki 80x80x32 fan to slap onto my Alpha 8942.. only problem is that none of the screws Alpha provides are long enough to mount the sucker. The instructions describe them as being M3 x 60 (80x80x15mm fan) and m3 x 70 (80x80x25mm fan). I'd like to try and get a hold of some m3 x 82 screws but i dunno where i can get em.. hardware store perhaps.. but my question is: is the "m3" the diameter of the screw? or any other suggestions on where i can get something that'll fit?

thanks

hey there,

Yes, the M3 refers to it as a 3mm metric screw that is 15 mm long or 70 mm long, whatever you have there. There are all the ranges M2,M3,M4,M5,M6,M8 etc, all get bigger as the number gets bigger. The length of the screw(15,30,70 whatever) is the length of the screw from under the head of the screw to the end of the screw(ie. doesn't include the head of the screw). You may have a hard time finding screws that long at a hardware store not your more popular size.:burn:

I actually contacted alpha about this last week and still have the reply email.

Here is my question i emailed them with.

How can i install a 38mm thick fan onto this heatsink? The screws that came
with it aren't long enough.

Here is the reply...

Thank you for purchasing an Alpha!

You can either pick up some M3-50 screws from a local
metric supply store. These will have to be mounted through
the bottom flange on the fan. Most metric supply stores should
have these.

You could also use M3-80 screws, which will go through the entire
fan width. These would be hard to come by in the US.

These can be purchased at one of our resellers:

Although they are not listed on his site, I know
he has them.

I hope I have answered your questions.

hmmm... that's what i thought.. i don't even think most hardware stores will stock the m3x50 screws.. though i guess worst comes to worst, i can hack off a part of each screw and mount it on the bottom flange like the guy said.

thanks for the help guys!

i just emailed heatsink factory and this is what they said:

At the moment we only sell them with our 8942 and 8045. If you wanted
you could send payment for the screws using Paypal.com. They are 2.00
each plus the normal 7.50 for shipping. No joke on the shipping as
that is the min Fed-Ex charges us.
