Ive been looking into getting myself a Gforce 4 4200 (not sure which one yet) but i was concerned at the lack of memory cooling offered on any of the cards! even my gforce2 ultra uses ram sinks?

Does it not make sence to have SOME sort of cooling on these cards- especially *when* overclocking comes around ?

Some do, like Leadtek and Gainward.

But they use BGA memory, which is supposed to put out so little heat that ramsinks wouldnt make a difference.

This combined with that fan holder (<-whatever you want to call this). The 'fan holder' has 'tunnels' in it so the air from the fan also blows over the memory.

I am really good with words today.:p

although most geforce 4ti4200's don't use bga memory, they use the old style rectangular ddr sdram, I've attached a temp probe to my ram by means of some frag tape and with an ambient temp of 26c the max temp I've seen of the ram is 49c, also I've noticed that games impact temps drastically, Ex: Counterstrike load temps 43c/ Quake3 load temps 49c, these temps are pretty safe for moderate memory overclocking like I have in my sig, however I'm going to put some ramsinks on when I wanna push it even higher, also mike k touched on an important subject, the geforce 4 stock coolers, they are a wierd and unique design and there are passageways so to speak that look like they direct the air towards the ram, however 128mb cards have ram on the other side too, so ramsinks would be needed there.

I would say that you could push the ram to 530-550mhz without ramsinks, anything after that I'd be putting some on!

just for clarification purposes.. i have the gainward 4200 and it does not come with any ramsinks...

I replaced the stock HSF with the Tt Geforce4 HSF and i've almost no difference between the two.. Each time I had AS3 applied and at best, there might have been a 1-2C degree of difference.. but way too little to reliably state.. this is surprising considering how heavy the damn thing is.

As far as heatsinks, I slapped some onto each chip using arctic alumina adhesive and they get pretty hot after a night of gaming..

I know I stated this before in another post... but just remember to seat the card in the AGP slot to determine if any heatsinks you add will impede reinstallation of the card... i had to leave one heatsink off because it was hitting my memory chip clips

cheers guys- i dont plan on overclocking the card for a while yet, but i rekon i would get some sort of sinks on them lil chips wen the time did arrise

Better safe than sorry
