View Full Version : Sound in old DOS games under 2k/XP?
Has anyone else figured out a way to allow older DOS games to detect your sound card in Win2k or XP?
I wanted to play some Warcraft II, but I can't get the sound working now that I use XP. I've had this problem with several other older DOS games as well.
errr, old dos games used PC speaker mostly ;) Try using compatibility mode when running WC2, maybe that will help. I played doom and WC2 on my XP machine, and both had perfect sound.
Yeah I tried Compatibility mode, wouldn't work.
And I don't mean games old enough to use the PC speaker, I mean games around the same age as Warcraft1/2, Duke Nukem 3D, etc
They can't detect my sound card at all.

DOOM Collectors Edition works fine for me. Haven't yet tried DK3D. Hmmm, why not?:D
Have you tried going to microsofts site and downloading the capatibility updates for 2k/XP??

Are they included in the updates Windows update gets automatically? Or do I have to find them myself?
I used Update recently and everything's up to date according to it
I'm not sure. http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/tools/appcompat/default.asp Here is a link to it. I didn't see Duke3d in the list, but It may still work.
VDMSound (http://www.classic-trash.com/sound.php) is the best solution ive heard of so far.
It's a longshot, but the ScummVM might work.

Thanks :)
VDMsound works for Warcraft II, haven't tried anything else yet, but this is promising.
