View Full Version : Ack! Temp controlled voltage regulator is LOWERING voltage with higher temp!

I made the circuit here (http://www.virtual-hideout.net/guides/temp_controlled_fan/index.shtml). When I measure from pole to pole it says I'm getting a good 9.5 volts from ambient temp.
When I turn the hair dryer on I get lower almost to 6 volts.
Also even though I'm getting power the fan doesn't spin... I've checked the polarity, swapped the fan's wires around two or three times and then dbl checked the fan works from my 12v.
I used the exact parts and I am clueless.

yeah these forums are kinda getting dead lately... i have no clue so i couldnt tell you..

These bb's are really dead compared to what I'm used to =/
Any other more active boards?

only the [h] but thats not positively more active, that place sucks.... i cant wait for my site and forums to go mainstreem, i can see it doing that too :)

My pics on my WTB: Waterblock post work now. I shut down my comp so I can sleep at night...

Somethinga gotta be wrong.
You said the volts go down the higher the temp?
That would make it spin faster at colder temps. You want fast spinning at hot temps, and low spinning at high temps.

Well there's the problem of it not spinning at all though. There's voltage going there but there's no fan motion. I've swapped the polarity of the fan cables a couple times too.

Something is wrong with it, make sure everything is in there right
Its not giving the right voltage, so maybe something is wrong, like its not giving constant voltage or something weird thats stopping the fan.
Make sure the fans not dead or anything.

I checked the fan against my 12v, 5v and a combo of the two (7v) and it works at all of them.
I'll try and get a pic of the circuit tomorrow. What's weird is the resistance goes DOWN as the temp goes up which means the voltage should go UP.
So two problems:
1)Fan not working even though there's voltage.
2)Voltage goes down with temp increase.
can you attach the fan and check the voltage then?
maybe there's something wrong with it and it won't even be able to give enough current?
as for the slowness of forums.. i guess people are having holidays..

I have checked the voltage coming out of the thing, it goes DOWN.

Maybe its not allowing enough watts or amps or something like that to go through to the fan.
Check a small fan on it (if you have one).

Yeah sounds like the regulator for the fan is not calibrated right. Possibly its flipped from what it should be and then also doesnt let enough voltage get to the fan....Do you use the 4 pin adapter or a 3pin off the motherboard?Sorry that i am not totally up to date on the power connector on the heatsink. Maybe take it apart and test the rpm regulator on another fan that is about the same speed?
