hey,

sorry for my novice status but i am a newbie!!!

i am just about to put the finnishing toucvhes onto my first built pc. I have an amd athlon xp 2100+ with a KT3 Ultra mb. to make sure that the heatsink etc is working and running well is it possible to connect everything but leave the cpu out then turn on the power (with the heatsink also connected but no cpu) - this is to make sure that the cpu wont get fried and that i have connected the heatsink fan correctly and the wires go to the right connectors on the motherboard.

thanks for your time

the plug on the heatsink fan should be keyed to prevent you putting it on the wrong way.
well, it can go on wrong, but you'd have to force it. lol

i've never tried powering up a mobo without a cpu. but it should power up as normal and make a sort of siren sound because there is no cpu present.

Your computer will power up without the cpu, but as the guy said above, it'll give a post error.
