I have a 15GB Maxtor with 2 partitions. One is 6.8GB and the other is 7GB. I have XP Pro on C: formatted in NTFS. I can right click on D: and select format. Then I have the option of selecting the file system. I want to install ME on there so can I still use XP if I format D: in FAT 32? Thanks

One of the best and most thorough articles I've read on dual booting WinXP with other MS OS's (Win95 OSR2/98/Me, W2K/NT 4.0/NT 3.51, and also MS-DOS/Win 3.x) can be found in the MSKB, at the following site...

HOW TO: Create a Multiple-Boot System in Windows XP (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q306559) ;)

Unless ME comes with it's own bootloader...

...it's probably more trouble than it's worth.

I slap in my 9x systems in first, then I add NT. And with root formatted as NTFS, it'll have a tough time running the DOS files required for ME.

Ok thanks. I will have to reformat in FAT 32, install ME, and then XP. I will save that for when I have a lot of time.:)

Why are you dual booting XP & Me? It sounds like a match made in hell :(

What's wrong with that? Why is everyone hatin' on ME? The only other OS I have is 98 but that is on a recovery cd and I don't want all that HP crap that comes with it. Also, I think that the drivers already on that cd will cause conflicts with my current setup.

Ok I changed my mind. I want to put Red Hat 7 and the question now is do I have to format the whole drive? I have Partition Magic and I think I can use that to change the partition file system. But will changing the other partition's file system keep XP useable?

yeah partition magic can format your second partition to ext2 so you can put on red hat, or you can just run the installation and redhat should format it for you, just make sure you pick the right one to format. Also as long as you have all your xp files on the first partition you shouldn't run in any problems with winxp.
