Sorry about the post eariler. When I was at radio shack I bought two 5v LED's and two 3.7v LED's just to play around and see which to use and what would be better. After seeing how impossible it was to remove the cover of the mouse and what little I had to work with in the way of using the 5v line inside I decided to just use what I could and bought some resistors for the 3.7v and used the 5v...
The front of the mouse has the two 5v's

The two side LED's are the 3.7v

finally...

For some weird reason the 3.7v blue LED's from radio shack are brighter and more proper color. The 5v one's were dim and practically purple!!!
Like I said before I would've taken pics the entire way through but I do not wish this mod on anyone, I ended up breaking one tab cover and having to shave my rt mouse button notch just to get my rt mouse button to work after I got the covers back on. You all wouldn't believe what I did to get to the 5v line since the solder pts on the bottom of the mouse pbc were too micro for my gun and my experience. OYE!
Thinking of modding this mouse? God bless ya cause its a B1TCH!

my MS intellimouse already glows red on the back... heh... so i'm lucky.
Nice mod though.
Do the led's feel warm when you are using it?
That looks awesome man. Im glad you finally got it done after all the trouble you had. All in all are you glad you did it? Or wish you would of bothered?

Telling ya I'd feel better about the mod if putting it back together and taking it apart went smoother. The electrical went great cause of all the research I did.
All in all, I definitely thought about selling it and trying again or just settling for what I had before, but I guess I'll just stick with it cause its turning to nighttime and looks DAMN SWEET!

I gotta say that's one sweet looking mouse. I'm truly tempted to try it out myself. Could you give me some linkage to the guides you used??? Also how much did this project cost you and how long did it take to finish???

Here is the wheel LED how-to (http://metku.net/index.html?sect=view&n=1&path=mods/firewheel/index_eng)

Thanks Penguin4x4! These are probably dumb questions but I'll ask anyway:
1) Is the original wheel of the IBM mouse transparent???
2) Is that mouse an optical mouse???
3) Did you add those holes for added light or were they already there and you just put LEDs in them???
4) Is that mouse USB???
5) What's the name under which that mouse is sold???

I'll answer those questions:
1.) The lit wheel you see is stock
2.) The mouse is optical
3.) I drilled the holes myself, VERY carefully and placed them where I thought they'd look the neatest
4.) yes, USB
5.) It is the IBM optical Navigator and can be bought for $19.99 at bestbuy this week after $10 rebate. $30 normally. Damn cheap if ya ask me, I didn't mind replacing it for $30 if I F'd it up
The costs for the project were nominal. The LED's ran me $15 and the resistors were $0.99. I had the solder, soldering gun, glue gun, wire, etc.
I'm tempted to go buy another IBM mouse, crack it open just for that wheel and put it into one of my two spare Intellimouse exploreres. Unfortunately I want to keep the blue motif and stupid MS is obsessed with RED...
Any other questions... I'll post the resistor guide I used to figure out which resistor to buy. Because I used a resistor with the 3.7v and put them in parallel there is no problem with the LED's getting hot at all. I'm actually surprised the electricity part of everything went so smoothly.
The only guides I used were trying to understand which voltages to look for/resistors to use. Otherwise I just winged it,
-popped open the cover, used a multimeter to find the 5v line, soldered into the 5v, soldered the two 5v LEDs, soldered the resistor, soldered the two 3.7v LEDs, soldered the appropriate grounds, drilled holes at a downward angle (<5mm diameter drill bit), affixed the LED's with hot glue, put the cover back on best I could and walla!. The soldering took me the longest cause I'm an idiot... A pretty clean job overall and looks sweet at night!!!
If you ask really nicely I'll make a schematic for you to see how I wired stuff. I can't believe no one else has done this to this mouse, it really was worth the effort. If someone has a better time of getting that cover off let me know theh secret, I broke off the clip by the rt mouse button by accident :-(
good luck!

So putting blue LEDs in the M$ Mouse wouldn't work?

If you are talking about my post, My mouse has a light in the back as well as the laser used for the working of the mouse.

I was telling penguin that M$ uses red plastic on the back of their mice so changing out the LED's is futile...
here I just took some night pics: drool away ;-)

I really like the way you positioned the led's. I would do that, but it would require time.. and... yea...

thanks dude, I had no clue where to put them but I knew I wanted them to attempt to shine down and not be on my hand...

I've got one and it's awesome. Especially in CS.

Muah ha ha ha, next stop, converting PALM Docking thingie LED from green to blue *Palm quivering*... then keyboard LED's to blue. There really seems to be no end to my insanity

Ok please stop posting pics of that mouse, its awesome beautifulness is just too much to bear...
Seriously though I'm now looking for one, too bad BB doesnt ship to Canada...
Ok about the soldering, I've done quite a bit of soldering for pipes and stuff but never on electronic components. I realize using my big gas torch isnt an option:D . I do have a smaller electric solder gun. Just how small should it be??? I dont really mind getting a new one as I'm planning on modding my keyboard and putting lotsa LEDs in my case. I might also add some to my screen and I'm seriously thinking about putting some glowire in my FPS2000 speakers so I will definetely need a good soldering gun. Any recomendations???
Also you said the 3.7V LEDs from "The Shack" looked better. Would you be so kind as to give me the part number on them??? (For some reason RDs in Canada dont carry any electronics part, only stuff to rip your cable company!)
Oh and you seem to have forgotten to link the page with the resistor chart. What resistor did you use for the 3.7V LEDs??
Also you said you put them in parrallel so if I decide to use 4x3.7V LEDs I could put them all in parrallel with a single resistor correct?? (I cant believe I was studying computer engineering a year ago, I forgot all that electricity stuff already, I think I'll take out the books and review Ohm's law ans others...)
A schematic would be really nice but I'm pretty sure that once I have the mouse in front of me I'll be able to find the 5v line just using my multimeter.

lemme see what I can dig up, I have to go to work now from 1:30pm to 1:30am so I'll post ans to your qestions tomorrow..
OH, I almost forgot, I need to make a trip to walmart for three more blue 5" neons... MUAH HA HA, time to add some light to my AIWA speakers... they have a really big intake in the front/bottom time to shine some light on those puppies, hmmm... :-)

I hate living in Canada, none of the good stores like newegg ship here and all of our stores carry such a limited number of choices. Go look at the www.ibm.ca website and look for mice, they have like 3 yay!
Anyway no stores in Canada carry that mouse =( Could anyone buy it from best buy and mail it to me?? PM me if you could do that. THanks!!!

Nice mod! I was going to do the same with my mouse. I was going to use blue and a crazy light white/blue on mine. How long did it take and I am sure it wasn't too hard eh?

Sorry, for those interested here's another link to the LED RESISTOR CALCULATOR (http://linear1.org/ckts/led.php)

So you used a 33ohms resistor for your LEDs right? So if I was to use 4x3.7V 20mA blue LEDs all in parralel I'd need a 18ohms resistor, does that make sense??

If you want, you could try a USB powered Flashlight (http://www.pimprig.com/sections.php?op=viewarticle&artid=79). Or you could go a little nuttier and try a Firewire flashlight, as Firewire provides 15W, 6 times the wattage output of USB. :D
