I made a cardboard shroud for my heatercore. My dad saw it and said "your not putting that in your computer, it will start a fire". I'm pretty sure this is very unlikely so can some who is knowledgeable in this area(circuitry, electricity whatever) write a decent post explaining that this is not the case?

Many people here have or are still using Cardboard shrouds, Heck I once used a Plastic Sqr. Flowerpot until I bought D-tek Shrouds.

Unless the paper is going to spontaneously combust I think your safe ;)

Well, thats exactly it. I myself have no problem with it. I don't need to prove it to myself, but to my dad. Does anybody know at what temps cardboard burns? Thanks, I just need some hard data to persuade him.:o

paper spontaneously combusts at roughlty 451 F, Cardboard is somewhat similar, if things get that hot in your computer, damage isnt going to be caused by the burning shroud.

Wow, thats a very nice temp drop, what were you using before? Also how did you shape it/put it together? Thanks

To answer the post, up until two weeks ago, I had a P3 ,833 @ 1.007GHz in a cardboard case, using cardboard ducting for my CPU fan and case fans. The temperature never rose high enough to make the cardboard warm. There is little chance of it going on fire, unless you use it as a heatsink for your CPU or GPU, :) ,

And to answer the question of what a shroud does, it focusses all the air pushed by the fan, and makes it flow into the radiator. It also holds the fan about an inch or so from the radiator, allowing air to pass through the middle of the radiator, which would normally be blocked by the centre hub of the fan if the fan was fixed right next to the radiator. It's like strapping a fan to the narrower end of a funnel, and the radiator to the wider end.

If you want to be a total smartass (I know I like to) you can tell your dad to go read the book (Farenheit 451) that way he never forgets the temp paper burns at.

On another note, I once baked a pizza and for some reason it had 2 of those cardboard backer things under it and I only removed one. Not paying attention I put it in the oven... 400F for 20 minutes, no fire at all, just 1 soggy pizza. In fact the cardboard didn't even darken.
