the other day while surfing i heard a bump inside my computer case.Less than a second later via hardware monitor beeped an overheat warning.i quickly pressed the power button and a mere 4 seconds later it powered off.removing the side i found what i have allways dreaded, the cpu fan had fallen off and was lying on the bottom of the case.fearing a fried cpu i reattached the fan and tried to boot,it didn't.i retried holding the delete key,no go.i reset cmos and unpluged power cord, pressed the power switch and still a no go so i held the delete key again and hiy the reset and to my surprise,it booted.

it may have been the size of the sk6 or the fact that the case temp was 26c but for some reason it didnt melt! it has no ill affects at all except that it runs a few degrees warmer and i think that may be because of melting the as from the die and i havent taken the time to reapply any.

after a scare like that i am considering the instant off option.

Wow...that is quick. You are lucky my friend. Hate to see what would have happened had you not been there. You have a thermal protection setting in bios. You would be out a nice chunk of change if you were not there.

Thank the overheat protection of your mobo for saving your cpu.
that's the main reason I bought my A7V333.

My Soltek board won't boot when I have ABS on :/

Neither will my friend's who has the same board. I'm really beginning to think the 75drv5 suxx0rz.

So it was only the fan and not the sink right? One of the benefits of my cooling setup is you get a good amount of time to deal with the problem if the fan dies/falls off/ gets jostled unplugged. I've got a duct right over my cpu fan and all of my other case fans push air out of the case. Once I'd sealed off all of the cracks and joints that I could that left the cpu duct as the only major point of entry for air. Several times I ran the system with the cpu fan unplugged (I knocked the connector loose) and because the force of all of the other fans pushing air out causes strong suction at the duct my temps take a while to rise before locking up the system. I once did a reinstall without the fan working and it took just under an hour to lock up. And when I rebooted it just picked up where it left off. Properly structured negative air pressure is good.

yea it was just the fan.superglue just isn't as good as it used to be.something is amiss however.after the shutdown my temps were around 49c without running f@h and before were about 44c while running f@h.i removed heatsink and cleaned of the old as and reapplied today and now my temps are 39c at full load.must have been a heck of a burn in!

as has to be put on just right, maybe the first time you put on too much and this time you did it just right...that is why the temps are lower...

just be considered lucky its still alive :D

you are very lucky it survived, or i would of had to beat u down with a stick cuz u killed a cpu! :p

I don't know if I'd say you're that lucky. High-speed p4's put out more heat than that processor, and all they need to ensure survival is that little IHS.

Trust me it was the SK6 that saved ur arse. That heat sink can buy u some time as long as there is a breeze. When i built my system i forgot to plug in the fan.

that only helps if the fan breaks, if the heat sink itself fell off, it woulda fried.

AMD should seriously built in thermal protection into the CPU itself like intel does

(btw i am an amd fan, so dont flame me lol)

I ran my 1800+@733MHz and 1,5v and i could run it without a fan on my Alpha 8045... The temp was something like 55celcius after a while though..

That would mean an IHS. A P4 without one will fry just as specatcularly as an Athlon. Take it or leave it. I, personally, will leave it.

my psu fan case died while a lighning storm was going on and my psu got fried to the lower levels of purgatory and it screwed up my mobo and processor. In one way im happy this happend becasue no wi can get somehting better then that 800mhz slot a athlon:D .

yeah me too, i bet that is part of the reason that intel costs more

What kinda processor are you running on it? It runs both my 1800+ and my 2200+ fine.
