I read that they made both AMD 1800+, how can I tell what I got? I got mine from a local store, and it was the retail version.

Palomino or Thoroughbred?

Odds are you have a palomino. The lower models of thoroughbreds haven't really hit the market yet, and they'd probably cost more than the pally's do. How much did you spend anyway? What is printed on the core?

Good question, I cant remember whats printed on it lol, its in my $2k system. I think I paid around $140 for it, but it was back around April.

Ok...I thought my almost 11,000 was high!
I haven't unlocked my xp yet, or done any cooling to anything on my comp, but I got almost 11,000...I have no idea how I am going to get 3,000+ more points! I will try though! Now I have a real goal :)

I guess my $2000 system will become more like $2500!

Definitely a palomino... thoroughbreds only came out in the last month or so.

I'd cool that XP and add some case fans if I were you. I'm almost at 11k 3dmarks myself with the same cpu and a Radeon 8500!!

Do the palominos and the Tbreds fit in the same cpu slot? I seem to remember reading that they are different shapes, but I'm not sure, I can't recall seeing any Tbred only MBs.

Thanks!

Yes they fit in the same socket, but not all palomino boards will run t-breds. Additionally, many that do need a bios update.

Some palomino boards will run t-breds only after you unlock them. (This can be done with a single bridge on t-breds.)

Considering all this, it might not be worth going to a t-bred unless you KNOW your board supports it.

Thanks Caffinehog, but how can I tell? I read through the whole manuals, and it never specifically says it can use a Tbred. Is there a list somewhere? I think both of the MBs in my sig are Tbred complient, but I want to be sure.

A t-bred will have a small core, 2/3 as wide as it is long. A palomino will be almost square.
A palomino has the stepping printed directly on the little silicon core. A thoroughbred has the stepping printed on a black sticker on the outer part of the processor.

Whoops, sorry, read it wrong... I don't know. Check the manufacturers website, and if they say it supports 2200+XP and higher, then it supports it. Otherwise, it might or might not. AMD and mobo manufacturers haven't been very clear on this issue, so it's mostly just luck. Ask around.

The Asus A7V266-E I have has an area where you can choose btw.. Throughbred or Palamo with jumpers.

Is that some kind of new revision on the board or something? The two a7v266e board I have only have jumpers to choose between Palomino and Thunderbird.
