We have been working on this system @ the office all morning now, and we are about to go crazy. So far the computers that we put this HDD in, boots up fully into windows about 50% of the time. The rest of the time, eighter it freezes half way into windows, I get the "no operating system error", or the bios sees it, but then when I boot off a floppy the HDD does not exist even though the bios says it does. I'm about to pronounce it dead, but I"m wondering if you guys have any ideas first.

Mine's doin the same thing, only the system files are corrupted. Could be that, or the hard drive is slowly dying.

I would lean towards slowly dying, sometimes the computer hangs when it tries to detect it, way before system files come into play.

I'm not sure yet, just ran two diagnosic tests, and it passed both but there was major slow down at certain points where healthy drives would pass the test in a few minutes. Maybe I will just send it to a retirement home for its last couple days.

I had a western digital drive that did the same thing.

Half the time it would boot and run fine as wine. The other half the system reported no fixed disk.

Lovely. RMA it back to compaq

Well now it is constintly able to get half way into windows, and then about half way, the HDD LED stays on, no blinking and no activity from the drive, but the bar at the bottom of the win98 start up screen is still moving.
