I have an older Sony tuner model #STR-AV570. Lately, it keeps cutting out when I am playing cd's, almost as if I have overloaded or overheated it. It didn't used to do this.
It stays on, but with no sound, and the display flashes a small red square with a "P" in side of it. To reset it, I just need to turn it off and back on. It is doing it more frequently lately. Any idea what this is, and how I can fix it?
thanks
All I can think of is maybe your speaker wires are crossing. I had a problem like that on my stereo it would blink red. The wires on the back of my speaker were touching each other. Just something for you to check to make sure.

Sounds like the reciever is switching into protection mode.
The link above discusses trouble shooting this problem.
Good luck. Could be as simple as a speaker wiring short.
But it sounds like overheating. Are you trying to power very large speakers?

No, the speakers are small, and by Sony as well. I have been using them together for years.

I am going to switch the speakers to the "B" channel...so far that is working...
This is an old receiver. I bought it in 1993, I think. It has been trusty up until now.
The "B" setting seems to be working. Might just be a problem with the "A" channel...
hopefully that works!
Sony equipment is really good in my books.
I've got some older sony stuff that just keeps on ticking.

Update. It was still cutting out.
I decided to install some fans...here is the thread in modding.

If you have a multimeter, you can check the DC resistance of the speakers, they should read no lower than around 5ohms. Like the others said it could be the wires touching, or something like one of the speakers blown, causing a short circuit.
How loud do you play them? If you constantly play them at loud volume, the reciever probably just cant handle the load.
Also, the "A" and "B" channels connect to the same amplifier outputs on the amplifier, they are only their to allow for hookup of more than one set of speakers.

I checked the resistance. It read about 6.9 in both, which should be fine. As it turns out, I think it might be heat. Not that I play the music any louder than I used to, but it might be more sensitive because of age. I remember that this might have also started when I put the dvd player on top of it (it used to have a tape player on top with no problems, but that was years ago). Also, I did a good dusting today. Between the dusting and the two fans I installed today, I think the problem is resolved.

Age shouldn't be a problem (As you read I'm using an Oooold AMP), It might be DC-Offset...measure the voltage (DC) on your output (Speaker) terminals (Should be close to 0V).
