Hi guys just got a new xp1800 stepping agoia "Z" and its brown. I have never heard of this stepping before. I booted up my computer and it's at 45 c off the batt, idles around that to. I have 8k3a+ corsair 3200 asus gf3. My computer locks up continually iv'e tried 2 different heatsink slk-800 pal 8045 same results almost. Has anyone heard of this stepping? The cpu letters stick out a little bit. When I took my slk-800 of their were impressions on the base of the heatsink. I had to sand it to get them off.
Any advice????
Thanks Ron

WOW never heard of a Z stepping! What were your temps before this chip? The 8K3A reads temps from the on die sensor in the CPU so they read hotter, but 46C idle with no OC is hot. Are you running stock? What is ambient? More info please!

i have heard of the Z stepping. The Z stepping sybolizes the last of the palominos so what you got is quite possibley the best overclocking chip available.
try reapplying thermal paste? using a faster speed fan?
edit: the thing about the zero overclocking potential is correct and what i said above there was wrong. i got that info from a bad source and after checking out other ones i have came to the conclusion that unfortunatly, you aint gonna get more than 1600mhz out of that cpu :(
You are using thermal paste right? Hmmm.. I've never heard of "Z"... When you take off your heatsink do you see an Arctic Silver imprint?

Tried to re_seat heatsinks 4 times , each with new artic silver same results every time. The imprint is actually in the copper heatsink itself I had to sand it out. The die of the core you can feal the letters sticking out. The fan I have on my slk-800 and pal 8045 is a 37 db 43(I think) cfm? fan ys. My ambient temps are around 75ish in the house.
Maybe the motherboard is just more accurate than my other epox 8kha+????

Like I said before, the 8K3A reads the temps from INSIDE the core of the cpu whereas the 8KHA+ uses the insocket thermistor which is totally inaccuarate and usually off by around 10-12C.

yeah my temps are about the same as yours, but i've given up on trying to make it cooler. like 47c/52c is my temps, but im OC'ed. i've been told that my temps are fine, with the on-die temps, up to 65c is safe.

My computer keeps rebooting....could this be because of something else then? I just formated it and it still reboots when I play a movie or someting temp hits 52 c. Is their a thermal shutdown automatically for xp? I have it disabled in bios.

i had the same problems with my win Xp, i just kept reinstalling it and all my drivers till i finally got it to work right.
What kind of power supply do you have? Reboots are usually power supplies and memory as well.

true, memory is a possibility. another posibility would be to chk your bios to see what your power on and off settings are set at. maybe your cpu overheat safety shutdown is set to low

are you running your ram with aggressive settings? if so this could def be the case. another reason could be the psu but unless you have a ton of decices you are powering i doubt it
Well, I just checked your psu and it's a 431watt. I have one and the VE version IMHO are very poorly made. Check your 5v rail in the bios. let it sit there and tell us what it says.
Enermax and EPoX, where have I heard that combo before....

Thank you for your responses so far,
I disabled cpu shutdown in bios, clr cmos to restore all setting to default, and my 5 volt rail is 4.89 volts. Finally got xp to install properly I think. I don't know what to do I left the paly 8045 on becuase it was quiter but after doing some testing its like 4 c higher than my slk800 :(. And my psu is loud as hell, im so sad right now......
I almost feel like selling everything and getting an intel 1.8a...:(
i have a AGOIA Z 1600+ running at 1.810 at 1.900v temp is 37c idal 43c load.10x181:p :D

I would lap those letters that are sticking up off that cpu. That will finally let you have good contact with your heatsink and the cpu. Maybe very fine sandpaper like 1500 and a credit card or somthing that is very flat to take off the spikes of the lettering. That should help temps out a bit also

I have a green AGOIA 1800+ running at 53C all the time.
I can get it to around 1750mhz right now, but it seems stable.
As soon as I get a BSOD I set the fsb down one notch.
It's been running for 3 days now.
