View Full Version : onboard graphics
I have this old computer (a compaq) and it has onboard graphics, I added another graphics card on but it won't work propally. I know it works as I have had it running in other computers. Yhe new graphics card doesn't appear in the device listing so can't change any of its settings. The onboard graphics card says it has a problem. So how do I get it to work with the graphics card?
You gotta get in the BIOS and turn off the onboard graphics. Turn off all the onboard crap if you can, it'll make the process simpler (unless you're using onboard sound as well, then leave that on).
When you restart it Windows should then detect it.

Ive tryed to get into the BIOS but since its a compaq it won't let me. I'll try again and see what I get.

if disabling in the bios doesnt work, check your manual, alot of times you need to disable it AND flip a jumper on the motherboard.
Don't have a manual as it was second hand (was given to me as my dad told them I had built my own computer) Ive looked for a jumper to change but can't see any.
I have win98 SE if that helps

Usually the bios key isn't Del. Try F1-F12.

my bios key is F8
When you turn the thing on keep one finger on any key, don't take it off no matter how many beeps the speaker gives you. Hopefully it'll cause some kind of keyboard error and you'll get a display that says something like "Keyboard error, press esc to continue or XXX to enter BIOS." Then just press whatever 'XXX' is.

Hey asj, how did it go? Are you still having trouble getting in the BIOS? If you ever got in, would you please tell me what key did you use? Ok. Thanks a lot.
My rig:
Stock Computer (Hewlette Packard)
Win98
Pentium III 533MHz
128 MB SDRAM
ASUS Hawk Motherboard
Still haven't got in to the bios:(
I might contact Compaq and ask them how to get into it.

My friend had a problem where he could not get into his Bios because of things like Dell, and Compaq and stuff
For him its CTRL+ALT+ESC. That gets him into the Bios. Maby it will work for you. Hope it works for you, i can't try it, cause for me its the Delete Key.
Thanks I'll give them a go!!
My main computer uses 'del' just like most computers, I think they should have a standard key for getting into the Bios.
I have contacted (well sent an email) to compaq and hopefully they will tell me unless I get there first!!
Try taking the side covers off and looking on the covers and on the bottom of the case and see if there is a scematic of what the jumpers do on that mobo. You should be able to find the jumper to disable the onboard graphics. If you do find it and get it disabled you will also most likely have to disable the onboard graphics in the device manager. I used to have an emachines which also had all that onboard crap and it was a pain in the butt. Even with setting the jumper, and disabling it in device manager the OS would still try to run on the onboard crap after almost every reboot. After awhile I got fed up and sold the darned thing and built me a real comp lol.

I had this exact problem on my compaq. Try this:
Go into your device manager under the system icon in your control panel. Find the display adapters. There should be an intel and your new graphics card listed under it, most likely with a conflict occuring. Click on the intel graphics and disable it. After you reboot it should be fixed...
