View Full Version : please help on burner choice.
which one do i go for 24x10x40x or 32x10x40x?
the reason im asking is i couldnt spend the money difference for the 32x, but i can save it somehow. i was wondering about the media suppot for that faster once im not planning to spend much with media. all i see is about 16x max, so how worth is it to spend more with the 32x?
thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!hehe!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

32x, definetely. <Off Topic> Would you like a CD Burner/DVD-ROM Combo drive?</Off Topic> That actually is the maximum burn speed on current drives as opticals are only running on ATA-33.
32x Liteon they can be upgraded to 48x with a firmware flash, check out CD Freaks Forum for Lite-On Overclocking (http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?threadid=42344)
yeah.. the only advantage i can think of from getting the 32x is upgrading it to 40x with a firmware flash, whats not quite an advantage if i plan only to use 16x media.
its not like i will only buy 16x media, but i doubt i will get anything faster in a long time - or spending more for the faster.
so this is right about my doubt: if i beleive im gonna have 98% of the time 16x media, why is it still worth to get the more expensive 32x burner?
i have almost no experience with burners so thats why im asking. i know you ppl use it a lot, do u all always have faster than 16x media??

How often are you going to use your burner? If you're a heavy-duty burner (e.g., you back up your hard drive everyday), then I would recommend getting the 32x. However, if you're going to use it once in a while to backup your CDs, then the 24x sould be enough.
Also, is it hard to find reasonable-priced high-speed CDRs and CDRWs in your area? For example, if you're in my area, it's almost impossible to find high-speed media. Some places carry it (like Staples), but they jack up the prices so high that it doesn't make sense to purchase it from them. Reasonable-priced media are usually in the 16-24x range (unless you purchase generic brands). So shop around in your area before making your decision and see what media are available.
dude, get the 32x.. not that much mroe and as far as media.. i thought* pretty much any media.. even thought it doesn't say it could support speeds that high could burn at that (heard that from the screensavers. i think pat or leo).
and..you said because of ata33 no cd burner can handle more than 32x or something around there, when will they upgrade to ata66? and what is the max now? please pm the answer :)
thanks-lee

i have a 16x and it covers ALL of my burnning need, dl's .iso's backups, mp3's music, copying cd's, and i use it regularly (about 2-5x's a day) so unless your gonna use it ALOT i wouldnt go over 24 unless your a speed freak

Well I have a 12x and I told myself that I would upgrade when I can get one that is 4 times as fast for about 80 bucks so it looks like it is about time for me to upgrade.
I used to have a 2x burner. I saw a 40x burner. I went to circuit city and it was 75 with a 45 dollar mail-in rebate. A 40x burner only 30 bucks awesome.
well obviously the 32x should be the way to go, but i need to wait yet about one week and money will make my choice actually. i cant see a reason to spend more for something i wont use for now.
im sure i will rarely want to spend for a 16x faster media.
