I have gotten this error when I corrupt all the data on my Hard Drive by knocking the IDE cable loose, or another time when I got a virus on the C: which made it un-readable.
Had you been working on the computer, and bumped the cable loose?
You won't hurt your HD, just make sure that the cables are plugged in all the way.
