well for the past couple days I ahven't been here...this is because my router didn't want to make the OC forums work =\...anyway...I have been getting tried of all these random disconnects from my annoying router...so I called them and I was like "WTF?!"...so the guy suggested to go into the router settings and then go into the MAC address clone and said to put what it says under "physical address" when you go into command and type in ipconfig/all you see physical address...you put that in the spaces...

Now by doing that I will say it has stopped the disconnecting BUT the problem was that I couldn't get onto the forums...so I now back to the other way which has a tendecy of disonnecting...but sofar it hasen't....but what I wondering is why would this MAC adress stop me from going to the forums but EVERY other site worked excepted the OC forums?

First question is what router do you have? I only assume that it is a Linksys seeing the tech support ****** is telling you to use the MAC address clone?

LOL!!!! you hit the nail on the head...it is a Linksys BEFSR41 4-port router

Ok, second question....Cable or DSL? Once again I'm assuming it's cable because the tech support ****** is telling you to use the MAC address clone? And if so, are you still using the cable modem that was provided to you and if so what model.

(Kingslayer drifts into a daze and says....Motorola Surfboard 4100....)

Why would you have MTU disabled? You want your MTU set at 1500.

And seeing you have Comcrap then everything makes sense.

The first rule of thumb is to never, ever, listen to anything their techs say. They are not educated in Comcasts system in any way, shape, or form. They do nothing but read off a list, then tell you to format your system when they can't figure it out.

Now. You should have your modem plugged into the UPLINK port on your router. If you're using the router as a router, then you should have DHCP enabled. Also set you network adapter to DHCP. Shut off the modem, shut of the router, and shut off your computer. Then turn on the modem and wait for it to sync. Then turn on the router and wait for it to sync. Then turn on your computer. If you still can't get to the forums let me know. And take a few screenshots of any routes you have in so I can see if any are interferring with port 80 but I doubt it.

If it doesn't work. Get the MAC address of the CABLE MODEM, call Comcrap and have them reprovision your account for that modems MAC.

The guy you talked to thinks that Comcast uses the MAC from your computer to do provisioining, but the silly guy is wrong. They use the MAC of the modem. But don't feel bad, it wouldnt have worked if you put the modem MAC in there either.

Spec-
Kingslayer has some valid points. I cannot comment on Comcast and how they provision the connection. I do know for a fact that my cable company uses the mac of modem+nic for provisioning, so therefore I clone my original nic mac when I was hooked up. AS for your particular issue, I might suggest going here (http://www.dslreports.com/forum/comcastv)for additional help. There are usually techs in the forums that can help.

Good luck

I ahd it disabled because before when I got a LOT of disconnects it helped to disable it....seemed to do it less....although I can say after upgrading my firmware I have yet to be randomly disconnected....which is good...guess I will enable MTU again and see what happens...

Also I have my modem connected to the WAN port....? the uplink port is used for when I install more routers/switches/hubs/etc...?

Spec - yes the modem should be connected to the WAN port. The uplink port IS for connecting to other hubs/switches.

yeah hopefully my new 16-port switch won't give me as much problems =\

No, but I know how they work. Well, how they DON'T work. I had Comcast and I had the SB4100 with the Linksys. Luckily they didn't provision like that in my area. They are totally clueless here......

And sorry, the cable modem does get plugged into the WAN port. I was thinking one thing and typing another.

If they do provision with modem + NIC MAC they should change that provisioning to modem NIC only. What if you change computers, what if you change NIC's. Then you have to call Comcrap to reprovision your account everytime. But I don't think Comcrap does it that way.

I spent way too much time troubleshooting Comcast problems when I had it. Key word is had.

And I take it that you get to the forums ok now?

I've been getting to the forums fine for a while now...what was the problem was that for about 5 days after skip upgraded I ouldn't becasue linksys told me to clone the MAC address...then when I asked Jeffbolton he said they worked fine...me knowing that the router was the only thing I changed I went back to the old way and took away the clone and it worked...I just wanted to know why the clone did that...:D

Knowing how they can provision, I asked the specific question, If I change computers/nic would I have a problem with connecting, and the answer was yes, for my provider. Why a co. does that, I can only speculate, as an added layer of security/authentication. As an IT person myself, I can understand the security aspect of provisioning with modem+nic mac addresses.

Actually, provisioning that way has nothing to do with security. It's about greed.

You can't add another computer and share the connection if they do that (not without something that spoofs the MAC) and you have to pay them more money. It's that simple.

one last question...I ordered a linksys 16-port switch...am I going to have to configure it so in dept as I had to with the router...? Or is it just plug it in and it auto-detects the network?

Thanx for all your help:D

More than likely it will autodetect everything it needs. You may have the option of confirguring port speeds and that, but your not going to do advanced stuff like breaking the ports down to differnet VLANS.

It's basically a dumb switch....or a smart hub.
