Which hard drive is better

Im planning on upgradeing my old 20 gig 5400 rpm hard drive to a 7200 rpm. My decisio n is between the Maxtor 40 gig 7200 rpm hard drive for $78 or the western digital 80 gig 7200 rpm with an 8 meg cache for $107. Would there be much of a perfomance improvment from the maxtor drive. 40 gigs is more then enough for me. So is it worth the extra 30 dollars for the wd hard drive?

I would go with maxtor. I have a maxtor and I love it. Everyone who Ive seen has great luck with maxtors.

Go with the western Digital "SE" with the 8MB Cache....it is SOOOOO fast....almost as fast as SCSI and the maxtor dosen't even compete with that speed!

Well, you'll here a different opinion from everybody you ask ;)
My Opinion is:
As long as it isn't Seagate it is ok! (Had 3 broken HD's in 2 weeks, all 1 year old!)
I've got 2 WD's running. One is 80gb 7200rpm. And it's fast.
Go to http://www.tomshardware.com/ and read the test's about the drives you want to buy. There they are testet, and compared to other drives. It's good help!
WD and Maxtor are both good brand's! But never ever buy a Seagate, that's what i've learnd. Seagate once was good, but isn't anylonger.

I've got a 7200 fireball. Still running strong.

Personally I think that wd and maxtor are about the same quality wise. It's possible to get a bad drive from any company these days.

I'd go with the maxtor 7200 and then wait for serial ata to come down in price.

Yep, you are right. You cna get a defetive drive from any manufacturer. But Seagate has low quality, so the chance to get a bad drive is higher.
Maxtor and WD are as thefly said similar quality, both really good.
I'm talking out of experience, although i only got one Maxtor drive.

You will find opinions and experiances with hard drives vary widely. None of them is a clear leader. I hate Maxtors, I see one fail almost every day. My favorites are Fujitsu, if you can find them, and Seagate. WD is ok, but where I work they have a failure rate higher than Seagate, but much lower than Maxtor.

I hear great things about WD's and my 2 year old Maxtor 40GB 5400 RPM is still running strong. Just whatever you do don't buy an IBM. Sure they maybe be fast but you also have a 99.9% chance of getting a sucky one (not a real statistic). You will definatly get more speed out of the WD and more storage of course and its only 30 bucks more so I say get the WD.

8meg CACHE hands down the best =D. I used only quantium and westerndigital so far. THis harddrive is extremely fast. My friends computer won't load stuff faster then my computer =). Its great i reccomend it over anything. Unless its those super fast 15,000 rpm scsi drives. GO 8 MEG BUFFER GO FOR IT AND NEVER LOOKBACK. Its great!!! i can't explain how great =P

That's kind of funny. I have 4 Fujitsu's 3 of which are bad, and 5 Maxtors that I've never had a problem with. Weird huh? I've seen more Fujitsu's fail than Maxtors, in my case.

In any event, the final choice is up to you, Matt. I'm pretty sure Ridenow, and I are just the exception to the rules.

Man, and from the single Quantum drive I've had, I'd have to completely reccomend them!! (24/7 three years straight, and still going strong!)

Also, I've tended to hear more good things about Seagate here, but it's true that you will never be able to truly make any heads or tails over which is actually better.... Perhaps we should make a poll mods? I'd be VERY interested in actually sorting out how many drives from each company have lived/died.

I'm not really sure but I think either IBM or Maxtor are gonna be putting out a 8mb cached disks.

IMHO and expirience, there's nothing worse than WD. I have a bunch of them DOAs and die, one even died after a FDISK, since that moment I promised to myself I won't even think about considering buying a WD HD. I heared good things about the Seagate which is a bit slower than maxtor but is quieter and cooler running. I can tell u that the maxtors run a bit hot, but they ARE FAST. I've got a 80GB D740X and it rocks 24/7, I also have a 10GB Fireball 5400RPM which I almost burnt, and its almost 3 years old and still goes strong! Well, as u've read, every1 has different opinions and expiriences, my expirience tought me to stay away from WD.

Normally I would agree that we are exceptions. However I feel I should point out that most people are saying they had a few of these or those fail and they suck. I am saying that I help maintain a network of about 7000 computers and am talking about over 1000 failed drives, the vast majority being Maxtors.

Maxtors have worked great for me. I have 7 of them right now. I have even bought used Maxtors that are 2 gigs and many years old without worrying. I am waiting for Maxtor to come out with a 120 gig, 8mb cache drive.

Yes but Western Digital is already out with a 120 gig 8mb cache drive and it works wonders. I would suggest the Western Digital, I mean those Caviars are sure pretty fast and very good. Maxtors are excellent nonetheless but go with the WD one because its fast, and two because it's bigger than the Maxtor. 100 dollars for a 80gig WD is very good where I live. Go for it. you won't regret it.

i cant stand maxtor...my ibm rocks the socks off all my other hard drives (WD 6gb, WD 12gb, Maxtor 20gb, and maxtor 40 gb) its faster..quieter, and is only like $90 on newegg. my bro got two of em, and did a RAID 0, and its soooo fast.

I will agree with that...I have only had like 3 HDDs in my life =\ until about 5 days ago when my two Western Digital "SE"s came....but 1 out of my 3 HDDs died and I own 1 IBM, 1 Segate, 1 Maxotr...and the maxtor died..:(

Well I decided to get the WD 80 Gig SE with 8MB cache since its supposed to be so much faster. It was just a bit more than the Maxtor that I was planning on getting but I hope it pays off and stays alive.
