Hi
I just got my overclocker unfriendly, but stable Intel 845E / 2.26ghz / 512kb / 533mhz / slow DDR / Costa Rica SL6D6 pentium 4 Northwood - Dell computer.

After taking a look at the (bottom) of the large aluminum heatsink, I suddenly noticed the plastic was still attached to the bubble gum colored heatsink sticky pad.

I know these suck, especially if you don't take the cellophane off before you stick the heatsink onto the cpu.

So I replaced it, just like I did with my AMD. with arctic silver, and wiped off the funny residue that was on the top of the cpu (heat spreader piece)

Just a warning - check your sticky pad

Or have I gone mad, and the plactic is SUPPOSED to be on there ? Anyway my chip is 100F now 2.26 @ 2.26

Nope... plastic isn't supposed to be on there. At least, it isn't on mine.

the heatsink will have a big warning saying remove plastic before mounting. The plastic is to protect the heat transfer compound. I think some1 in the assembly line was sleeping on the job;)

No remove protective plastic label NOTE was visible outside or inside the computer.

If I was a computer lamer it would have made a big mess eventually.

Now all I have to do to get this ready is install about 20 programs...

My heatsink came with the plastic on it that said "Remove before use" and I removed it but then dropped the heatsink...catching it but getting finger prints all over the cpu contact area...what would be best to clean this as i can see my finger prints all over it?

the fingerprints wont matter much if their in the white compound.. they'll get smushed out by the cpu anyway, but if you wanna clean it use some rubbing alcohol and cutips, be sure to have some replacement compound ready tho, arctic silver usually works best

Any thermal paste works better than that pad. You can get cheap white thermal paste at radio shack. Some compusa's sell a silver thermal paste, but I've never heard anything about it on here.
