View Full Version : Undeleteable File! -- Help Needed
my friend just downloaded some nonsense file on kazaa that has a really long file name and it wont let him delete it. I am gonna get him a 98 boot disk on friday but is there a way to get rid of this without dos?
kazaa is a file sharing tool. So if kazaa is running, and the file is in his shared fodler, then he's probably just uploading htis file, so he can't delete it.
Close kazaa and try to delete it again. if it doesn't work, try to boot in save mode, and try deleting it again.

nah none of that helps, i guess he will just have to wait for boot disk and dos. if that doesn't work ill post back.

Try and download a process viewing tool or if 98 lets you view the processes with ctrl alt del good. Nevertheless, look for one that haz kaz in it and end that process than delete the files. The same thing happens with gator and other ad crap, the dll files launch a process that monitors your system etc and you can't delete it because it is linked and it doesn't go away even after the other files are gone.
Good luck, download.com should have a program that will let you look for the process.

umm, Win 98?
Press F8 during startup and select command prompt only... no need for a bootdisk.
heh, no, i thought i mentioned it but he has win2k. hence the boot disk

Than you should be able to do it with the task manager. just look for things with k's and z's and probably an A. you can click on cpu utilitization and that should also narrow it down. you can try and delete it and see if the program kicks up on the utilization scale. good luck.

If his drive is formatted with NTFS you may be outta luck with that boot disk. Win98 can't read NTFS (especially in DOS mode).
If you can't figure out what process has the file locked you can always try booting in safe mode to delete it.

Hey - I'm the one with the undeleteable file that Demont is talking about. One, I can't see any processes in the task manager screen, and two I did not partition with NFTS, so in theory it should work. I dunno, if ya have any more ideas, feel free to contribute =)

also, it isnt a kazaa file at all, its a file downloaded with kazaa...

You may want to try this Demont/Daedelus...
Close all open programs. Click Start | Run | Type taskmgr.exe and hit OK. Leave Task Manager open, and Click Start | Run | Type cmd and hit OK. Leave the command prompt Window open. Go to Task Manager and click the "Processes" tab. "End Process" on "Explorer.exe". Go to the Command Prompt window and navigate to the folder where the file resides, and enter del <filename> (where <filename> is the name of the file you want to delete). Go back to Task Manager | Click "File" | New task | and enter explorer.exe to restart the GUI. ;)

I'm pretty sure that the disk includes a utility that allows you to read and write to NTFS volumes from DOS.
Good luck,

I got a undeletable file from Kazaa in WinXP, easily solved:
example
Run-Cmd
del C:\shared\meanfile.exe
I think you can figure out the.
Sorry if this doesnt help. :(
I had the same thing happen to me. I tried DOS,(I run FAT32) it told me it couldn't access the file. This was on a win2k box as well. Every time i tried to delete the file the computer would crash and suddenly all of my free HDD space was gone as well. I ran Norton on it and it said there was no virus in it, but hey, we all know how reliable those proggies are ;) . The only message I got from windows was that the file was not a valid win32 app or something like that. But, in the end I wound up formatting to get rid of it. Good luck

Try killing the process first and then deleting the file. In Windows 2000 this can be accomplished using the built-in Task Manager.

I had the same thing happen to me a few months ago, but somehow I was able to delete it (I forget how...sorry). I'm using the otherwise crappy WinME, and I didn't have to do anything drastic to delete it (i.e. reformat). All I remember is that it wasn't that hard to get rid of, but it might be more difficult on Win2K, I don't know

My brother did this downloading pr0n last month.
Go to the relevent directory in MS-DOS prompt in winblows and type del *britney*
If it isn't the same file as what he had, type del *text from name*
That will do it. No boot necessary. Downloading pr0n off Kazaa is a dangerous hobby, my friend. You're lucky you didn't get a virus or worse.

If it woudln't delete via explorer in Win2k or XP, then it won't delete via the command prompt "del" command. You'll have to get a boot disk or find some other way of closing out the process before you can delete the file.

It's a matter of whether the file is in use. If it's a file that is open then the file is in use and you CANNOT delete it. Windows simplly WILL not let you. You have to either kill the process or delete it while not in Windows (so it can't load up in the first place).

I've got one like that off of Direct Connect. I've been trying to get it deleted for a few day's now. Usually I'm able to into safe mode and get rid of it. But not this time. I've checked all of the processes and everything and nothing. I'll have to try from dos prompt though.
Just did it and it worked! Thank's Alot :)
