Hello everybody,
A friend of mine asked me to install Windows XP on his computer . The problem is that he does not want me to format his hard drive and just to delete the old windows 98. I can do this from DOS and delete the windows directory and the program files directory but I suppose that after the installation of WinXP the system will show me the menu from which I have to choose between the two operating systems even though the win98 is already deleted. The question is how to delete win98 from DOS so that I do not have this start menu after the installation of WinXP. Someone told me to delete all system files in the C:\ directory. Will that be enough? What about the fixmbr command in the recovery console of WinXP? Which one is the right way?
Thanks

the best way is to format and do a clean install. :D
why doesn't he want to format? he could end up with all sorts of problems if he doesn't.
anyway, fixing the MBR in recovery console after installing xp, should remove the boot options.

The reason he does not want to format is because he has lots of stuff like music, documents, movies and so on on his hard drive. The HDD is only 8 GB big but still he needs to buy CDs and write all this data most of which is not so precious but also not for deleting.

don't delete any of the old OS. upgrade to xp, then buy the cd's he needs to do his backups, then format and do a clean install.
or, wait until he has backed up everything and then format and do a clean install.
just deleting the windows directory and installing will not save his data, AFAIK, he will lose it all.

I agree with looktall. You should back-up everything and give hime the fresh install of WINXP. It will run alot faster that way.

Back up that data, and then format and clean install...
Why take the chance? If he wants to do it that way, tell him to go ahead and do it...That way if he loses all his data, it'll be on HIM and not you...
If it is against YOUR better judgement, back away smiling...
"Don't look at me, I told you not to go that route..."
My 2 centavos...

Thanks everybody for the replies. I convinced the guy to make clean installation and we formated the HDD. Obviously this is the right way
