well i got a 512 samsung cas 2 pc2100 and it does 180mhz on cas 2 setting i tryed a 256 samsung cas 2.5 pc2700 and it bottomed out at 178 cas 2.5 settings or did i get a crap 2700??

You got exceptionally good PC2100. Remember, PC2700 is rated to do 166Mhz which it did for you. Some PC2700 is already pushed to it's limits where other brands might have more overhead like your PC2100 did.

Also, CAS makes a huge difference, cas 2.5 ram can be rated to MUCH higher frequencies, but it won't run as well as most lower rated CAS 2 stuff. Mushkin used to sell "HSDRAM" in PC166 CAS 2.5, it only ran like 133 mhz at cas 2 before crapping out, where as the PC133 cas 2 stuff could nail 148 mhz still at cas2...So basically, in my opinion, you should always go with CAS 2 ram, cuz that setting makes more difference than somethin like 25 mhz FSB in performance, throughput is good but latency tends to be a bigger issue in most apps.
