ok if i was to test the atx power connecter for voltages with a multimeter which color wires do i stick the things in and what voltage should i be getting from them if you could tell me or point me to a website that would be great thanx

Here's (http://xtronics.com/reference/atx_pinout.htm) a site with both color and number charts.

One thing to add...The reading you get at the connector will be a good enough reading and all. But what the motherboard sees will vary slightly because of the tiny traces on the motherboard that are used in place of the wires.
Tiny conductors and a variety of components around the motherboard will probably make the motherboard see slightly less voltages than what the multimeter will see.

Did that make any sence?
