I just got my new Maxtor. Now I need to wipe out my current drive because I'm giving it to somebody. But, how do I do this? It's running WinXP. Thanks! :D

If you don't have any sensitive information on it all you have to do is format it. Or you could download some utilities from the hard drive maker and write zeros to the drive to make sure all information is gone.

u can write 0 to the HD with Killdisk (http://www.killdisk.com/downloadfree.htm)
u can download a free trail version that allows u to pass it once. Government standards at 7 times. but im sure 1 should do for u.

I was thinking I'll just boot off of the WinXP installation disk I got and then format the hdd through that, because that seems the only way to format it, right?

Go to the HDD's manufacturer, and download its utility, most likely it'll create a boot diskatte and when u boot will give u a few options, one of them should look something like Write Zeros (low level format), do that to ur HD, that will erase all info on the drive including partitions, its the best way to clear the info that is stored on a HD
