I am new to this side of the forum and was wondering if this had crossed the mind of any of you.
As you know the X Box has its own cutdown version of an operating system. This enables the hardware inside to function at a speed previously not attainable on a pc of similar power. That is to say, and I could be wrong here, the CPU of an X Box is say 700 mhz. Now, we all (well most of us) have at least a 1ghz in our systems now, yet these machines can compare with us on speed. This is because of the streamlined operating system.
So in effect these machines are achieving comparable performance to our muscular pc's with half the harwdware.
Is it not possible to have a dual boot pc? One for the Windows OS and one for a gaming os?
I think it, is but if there was can you think of the hardware giants response?! They would be in uproar because we all wouldnt be chasing the hardware carrot so passionately would we?
In effect, we wouldnt have to upgrade so often and games would have the headroom to be more complex and detailed without the incumberance of a full "all singing all dancing " operating system. It might be even easier to code for!
We have all tried to achieve something resembling this this by disabling this and that in windows to reduce the overhead of features we dont want that demand rescources.
Wouldnt it be wonderful if there was an os that was for games exclusively? No printer, fax etc etc features running and allowed the true thoughput of the hardware. I belive Nvidia are introducing their new impoved coding language called "Cg".This is supposed to enable what was previously massive ammounts of coding to be condensed greatly which requires less processing and thus more speed.
Surely what I am suggesting is that but on a larger scale.
I would be interested to know what you guys thought about this.
