External USB V.92 Modem.
I had an internal Creative Modem Blaster V.92 PCI modem and even the manufacturer-supplied drivers did not make it work with 2000 nor XP (with respective drivers). I mean wtf is that.
I bought this new modem (Zoom External USB V.92) and it's so damn fast (comparatively to an occasional, slow connection through Modem Blaster) that I'm extremely happy with it. Maybe it's fast because the V.44 compression is actually working. Hmm...

i agree.. if its an external modem, you're just about guarenteed its hardware based.. which is what you want. period. they work SO much better. less disconnects, and faster speeds usually also.
if you must go internal, they can be just as good, because they ALSO make hardware-based internal modems. either way for the best of the best, be prepared to spend 60-100 bucks.
brands to take a look at would be:
US ROBOTICS... http://www.usr.com/
ZOOM... http://www.zoom.com/
also if not going with a hardware based modem (cheaper winmodem instead) you should be OK as long as you stay away from ANYTHING with a conextant or rockwell chipset on it. if you see one of them.. run like the plague. horrible performance and the drivers are just a mess.
