I recently replaced my mobo and wen i removed my stock hsf i saw the ugly melted pink pad of death- this was promptly removed and heatsink clean well.

i then cleaned the surface of my core with a bit of rubbing alchohol
and then applyed the thin layer of as2.

BUT i didnt remove the melted pink **** from around the edges of my core (just too lazy at the time i guess- wanted to get my new pc set up)

On thinking about this and reading online ive decided that this was stupid (and i WILL be cleaning the cpu properly very soon) but could this excess goop be pushing up my temps at all seeing as its surrounding my chip and no doubt helping to keep unwanted heat in?

it shouldnt kill anything, but it mite screw up temps a little bit.....

As long as the goop is completely clean from the top of the core it should have little or no impact on temp.
There is such a small amount of surface area on the sides of the core, and so little air moving there that it won't really matter- as long as there is not any of it on top of the core.

That said, I always take the time to completely clean off my chips whenever I take them out- top of the core, sides, and the rest of the chips surface. I take a look at the bridges too, just to make sure I haven't "cleaned" my unlock from the bridges!

thanks- my temps seem to have got much higher since the shift and i wondered if this could have been a contributing factor.

my briges are fine :D discovered i had a factory unlocked cpu on removal of hsf- nice surprise

your temps may be a bit higher because the AS hasn't had time to settle in.
it normally takes a day or two and then your temps should start to lower.
