I desperately need a new HSF for my unoverclocked Tbird (idles @60 or so). I am eyeing the ThermalRight AX-7, but everyone says it's huge. Would it fit on a ECS K7AMA? I've already emailed ThermalTake and ECS about this, but no answer.

thanx!

The AX-7 is designed to use a 80mm fan, so as far as its width and depth, its 80x80...however i am not sure on how tall it is. But all you really need to now is its width and depth. I would suggest you either take a 80mm fan and place it above your CPU to sorta see about how much room it would take up, or use a ruler. I would pay close attention to how close your PSU is to your CPU/HSF. I hope this gives you some idea of about how big it is.

First things first. WELCOME TO THE FORUMS. Second, if you still haven't gotten the HSF yet I would look at the SLK600 (http://www.overclockers.com/articles571/) It has a smaller base and is just under the AX7 in the preformance guide.

yeah or you could get the even better performing slk800 (the best performing heatsink there is). if you plan on overclocking that tbird someday then the slk800 will keep it nice and cool but it is kinda pricey.

60C deff seems a little high, but befroe you go to a better heatsink, i would see what you can get out of the current one, its great practice for when you get a better hsf. Have you lapped the heatsink? Also what are you using as thermal compound? Whats your ambient and case temps?
WELCOME TO THE FORUMS!!
p.s. its a good idea to put you system specs in your profile, helps expedite quality answers, the more you tell people, the more they can tell you.

You should be cool. As long as your Power Supply Unit isn't right next to your existing HSF you should be cool. BTW: DITCH THE K7AMA...I hated that board when I built my first system. It was to much of a pain to work with and had a tendency to screw up IRQ's LOTS.....Get an EPOX...You'll thank me later.

BTW BTW: WELCOME TO THE FORUMS

Thanks for the replies, I would have responded sooner, but the servers wouldn't let me back on until I reset my password.

I settled on the SLK600, 'cause I found out that you can fit a 80mm fan on it (pcabusers.com review), and then it actually does better than the AX-7. Plus I know it will fit on my board.

I was worried about the heatsink's length and width and hitting capacitors, not the height, by the way, so the SLK600 will be plenty smaller. Thanks for the tip, ElGriton!
