A while ago I posed the question of...
"How can I remove the heated air that my monitors produce".
This is necessary for me as my small office gets HOT...QUICK!
Well I just finished 'phase 1' of the project, (took me about 2 hrs).
There is an 80X80 fan sucking air from each monitor, through the ducting and...after im done with the Jigsaw...OUTSIDE through the wall with a 120X120 fan placed at the 'outlet' to help expell the offending draft.
Sound is also an issue with all these fans so I took great care in making sure I thoroughly taped everything up nice and tight.
NOW, if someone can tell me the most effective way to hook all three fans upto a power supply(not the computers PSU) with an ON/OFF switch i would greatly appreciate it. :)
Anyway, here's the pics...what do you think?

And this is how the fans were secured to the ducting.....

I like the idea. My Samsung SyncMaster 753DF also produces quite a bit of heat. I don't think I'll be doing anything like this anytime soon though.
Where did you get that kind of tubing, what is the official name for it, and how much did it cost you?

The ducting was bought at "Home Depot" for $7.00. Its actually a dryer (clothes) vent duct, and its 8 feet long which was just enough.
I figure a buck for the scrap aluminum i had laying around and some 'foil tape' which i think is like 3 dollars a roll but ive had mine ages.
So 8 or so bucks and 2 hrs later my office is on its way to being cool again.
any suggestions for powering those fans independantly???!!!

You could go to Home Dept or a Target, Walmart etc and buy a AC/dc converter($5) and wire it to your fans, then plug the ac/dc converter into a power strip ($5) and that would solve your problem ;)

that should work ...thanks!
iv got a better idea, buy a window fan and get rid of the ducting.

Thats exactly what I wanted to do with the exhaust fans to my computer, I mean whats the use of heating up your romm/raising ambient temps like these freeking computers do. Thinking about doing that ducting when I get back to my dorm room (doesn't have AC like my room at home here)...

well brant that was an option but for one the window is at the front of my house and frankly, having a fan permanently stuck in the window would look way trashy :D
This has been a cheap/easy/fun/effective way to solve my problem. I havent got the ac/dc converter yet so I have yet to test its overall effectivness.
My only concern is that the two 80X80 and one 120X120 will not be enough to expell the air through that length of ducting...or am i just being paranoid:eek:
Has anybody ever built (and have pics) of and independant homemade power supply...? I finished my extra hard-core heater core mod for my W/C setup and would like to power the fans for that from the same power unit as controls the monitor cooling fans..?
wait a minit...I could just use this 300W PSU I have spare and hook everything up to that...right?
Ya, you can use a regular PSU to do what you want. There's a post somewhere that shows you the 2 pins you have to connect on the connector that would hook to the motherboard. Someone will go find it I'm sure.
Anyway, just connect those 2 wires and use the switch on the back to turn it on and off.

LoL...and the big silver ducts coming from your monitors don't :)
you guys continue to amaze me with the lenghts you'll go to, but it just shows you're true overclockers, nice job, but too extreme for me

what a complex piece of work . I think u should tidy all those pipes up. I think peter's ducting job is still neater. However it is a good attempt

I have to be honest, the ducting is kinda unsightly, but i didnt want to make the ducts too long as i dont want the heat getting a chance to dissipate back into the room. I live in Savannah, GA and it is soo hot here (im not really used to it as im actually from the UK) anyway, the heat coupled with an incredibly small office means i have to go to drastic measures to keep cool.
who is peter and where are the pictures of his ducting setup? i'd like to see them if someone can show me.
and if anyone has a better way to solve my problem then please let me know...

Hey if it works........ but I thought that if you lived in Georgia that everything was air conditioned by state law or something. :D
If the temp goes over 80 or if there is the slightest bit of humidity I'm cranking the ac on.

We have AC but these houses are old, mine for instance was built in 1879 and is in the historic district. So there not that well insulated and AC units have to work really hard. You should see my power bill! It would put hairs on the palms of your hands!
Plus i really think the coil needs to be cleaned or something...anyway! Point is.....
If watercooling can only reach room temp, and your multiple monitors etc are heating up the room...got to cool the room down..end of.

If you use a spare psu and you have some cat5 wiring or speaker wires laying around, you can run them inside the duct itself to each fan. If you use the cat5 wiring though, dont just use one strand for each connection. I'd use at least 2 strands per wire.

the wires from the fans are already protuding from the ducts and are ready to be plugged in..but thanks for the reply!
So ..
Have you noticed a diff. in room Temp ??
My "Office" used to be a Half Bath in a past life ...
Its about 10 feet deep .. and I can touch both side walls at the same time !!!..
My 21" SGI monitor heats that puppy up with a quickness !!
Kinda nice in the winter ... But here in Texas .. Summers are brutal ..
Also .. My monitor sits right below the window .. and the window is about 5 feet from the floor ..
I could do this with about 1.5 feet of tubing ...
Im goin' for it !!!

Just because no on else has mentioned this: Even unplugged a monitor with the shroud off and inappropriately touched can discharge and fling your butt (along with the rest of you)across the room. Be safe :)
Good point ..And true ..
I worked for 3 years in a monitor repair depot ..
Several thousand low amp volts has a way of ruining your day ..
being careful not to touch anything inside the monitor case isnt good enuff' ..
Ive seen the flyback circuit arc a few inches before ...
ZZZZZAP !!
