View Full Version : Ladies and Gents, Start Your Crunchers
That's right - get ready to burn some work units  I have set the teams. Each has the capacity to produce roughly 290 work units per day, with the exception of Team Horsemen - since their output is between 30-300/day I took half of that into consideration for the total daily output. I will pull the starting stats at midnight tonight and we are off :burn: Here are the teams:

Good Luck everyone.

When will the race end? Is it based on time or on when a team reaches a predetermined # of WUs?
I better get my dead power supply replaced soon.
In the past it was the first team to reach 7500 units. We can do that, or just run it for a fixed period and the winner has the most points at the end.

Lets stick with the 7500 WU's race. We can always do this again later but using a time limit.

Based on averages team Landshark will have to pull and extra 17ish WU's per day to compete with Team TC....I think we all have to watch out for GregM..........He's unstable but with moodswings that produce between 177-300 WU's per day....I'm scared..

that's FOR SURE!!
the only real "black horse" is those 4Horsemen!! their output is still an unknown(?)!! but school won't start till at least next week, so we all get a week time to run away!!
Norsemen? it's very hard to tell too(?)! even though he'd mentioned his output is more to the downside than up, but.....u know, as for any "forecasting", we'll see......
as for we Team LandShark, i've mentioned i'll be up my output another "couple" notch!
guess Team TC is the most stable team. and in the end, consistency could be the key!
good luck everyone & hope we all will have some Fun!!!!
Good luck to the other teams! :)

Haha if you guys didn't know the secret, if your CPU was handing in a result before 12 and Driver was set to auto transmit you could have unclicked it and get a 1-2 WU headstart depending how big your farm was ;) That's what I did with mine! bwahha!

I've already got 2 more than I started with, and I only had 1 ready to transmit in SETI driver. :D Anyway, tomorrow (today?) should be my biggest day ever, since I've currently got 3 24/7 crunchers, I'm finished tweaking my XP for the time being, and I'll be riding my motorcycle all day, so I won't be able to screw up my WU times by playing games/spontaneous benchmarking, etc.

oh just noticed one thing!!
w/ our current ave. each team is doing close to 300WU (at least)/day!! unlike last few rounds, some high output members joined for the race this time to make those high daily output.
if we still "just" race to 7500wu, it'll take less than 4 week to finish!!!! compare to our normal 6-8weeks time!
if we race to 15,000wu(?), it'll take 50days if we ave. 'bout 300/day. roughly 7 weeks IF nobody up their output(?)!! that should give enough time for people to tweak/add cruncher and more interested race like last one.
just my 0.02
Hey Guys,
Having trouble with the Seti Stats Program, but posted in the other thread. I also went to the Team Stats Page and noticed that Cuper is still listed instead of Turner my Seti name. Everything else looks great and I am infavor of 1st to 15K. 4 weeks is a bit short for me.:)
THANKS!!!!
Cuper :)
I added your name. I plan on doing the updates Monday evenings around the same time I took the starting stats. Sunday's I do the weekly stats, and that's enough sitting at the computer for me.
Hmmm? TC, did you pick these teams? I find it interesting that you're off to such a huge lead just in the first day.

He just added up the total output listed in Sir Epix's list and divided by four. That worked out to around 290, so he simply shifted members around until he had 4 teams with roughly 290 daily output potential. The only variable right now being the four horsemen.
Here's the actual spreadsheet that has the breakdown.
I should have put a winky after my comment. I was razzing you.
...but, boy, somebody sure got defensive.;)
Well, actually I was kind of puzzled. I haven't looked at the stats yet and I wasn't quite sure why my team would already be way ahead. Just wanted to clear up any doubts as to how the teams were organized.

if you can't get it back up, try taking off the vid pin mod. eric's tually screwed up with the vid pin mod after a while, we took it off, and it worked fine.
so you might wanna try without it, and redo if necessary..
Hope you weren't running more than 1.75 volts through it. I killed a 2.2 running 1.85 actual, and also a 1.6A running 1.75 with the oem heatsink. Both of them lasted about 2 months before starting to bsod at any speed, and finally not even finish post.

Nothing's updated, seems only updating weekly. Where can I go to see how the team race progress? I downloaded Landshark's teamrace.zip but that prog shows all the individual stat's, not specifically just the team race. Am I just lost or what?

yeah, the Team Horsemen would like to give all 3 of our Team a little head start in order to make thing a bit harder for them....:D
for those who's wondering/doubt 'bout Team TC. we all know that TC's setiq set to do a daily dump at midnight every night for a few hrs. he've set that monthsss ago. now, our race started @ 12:00am last night, so, that means he was dumping the day/half day before's work unit he had in his setiq. and that's make a very small lead for them. however, he certainly DID NOT has any means of "sandbagging" at all b/c his setiq had been that way for monthssss.
but anyway, WE, Team LandShark WILL drive thru them sooooooooooonnnn..................;) :D  :burn:
Yep no sand bagging - I just let my Q work at night so it doesn't take up bandwidth during the day when I use my cable line the most. Of course I do have a Q on another line ;)
According to the race file, it looks like Team Norsemen took a small lead overnight. Go Team Norsemen!!!

One trend I'm sure takes a measurable downturn during race periods is bank balances! If these hardware manufacturers ever discovered the effect that a team race has on hardware sales they would start sponsoring national evernts.

I'm going to try to get one of these (http://www.dlink.com/products/switches/des3624i/) for free from her, though... and maybe one of these (http://www.dlink.com/products/switches/des3624i/des362t/) as well to go with my free pair of gigabit NICs. :D God, I love free stuff.

u SURE not the only one!!
i have a 1.6a die on me. left me everything BUT cpu! and i couldn't reinstall windows on my 2.26b neither! not sure what exactly wrong. anyway, if it's the chip, i'll have to wait till next month before i'll get 2 new chips 'cos intel price cut is on sep.1 so, there goes 2 high power rig down at the moment........
or u think Team Norsemen will be in the lead right now? after 2 days, they r "only" 30wu ahead of us means roughly 15wu more/day with his 250+wu output today! but there's another 2 weeks before sep.1.......................

So where do you buy these, how much do they cost, and what kind of electric hookup do they need...................:D

they will cost "at least" a few grands to 10+grands. and for vary size 'cos they comes in like 3x10 panels and u just attach all the side panel together. so they definitly could fit in a room. some of them very small too, like 8x10=80^2 foots.
the only & main problem is the electric bill WILL kill u! 'cos they don't use those regular plug. they need heavy gauge stuffs. and they suck power!! i don't think any residental apartment place could power it up! or do u think i won't find a small used cheap one to put in a room?? :D

well, guess what? just check w/ my brother in law, he knows more 'bout it than me. he said the smallest one, so called step-in ('cos u can't walk in) 'bout 6x6x10 fridge (not frozen, but good for "at least 39F or lower!!) could be get for as little as 2-3000!!
now, a vaporchil 'cos u "at least 200+" each. so, if u have a farm of 10+machines (hint hint: TC, Havey, racecar), u can get one and like vaporchilling all the rigs for 'bout or less cost!!! and it has room for "at least" a couple dozen bare rigs (no case)!! sounds good deal?? ;) however, we r not talking 'bout the electric bill tho!

Think of all the 1U rackmount crunchers you could fit in there! Do they still hold up pretty good even with a few kilowatts of heat?
Okay first of all I can't believe we are having this discussion. With that said there are some problems with the idea. Those freezers and refrigerated units come with the capacity to cool down food. Food doesn't generate heat like computers do. I seriously doubt a walk in freezer could handle a room full of computers. It would require upping the tonage considerably. If I recall correctly one ton is the amount of energy required to melt one ton of ice in 24 hours. When I was playing with my first P4 I put the entire computer inside a deep freezer we had just gotten. With nothing in it the coldest it would get was 25F. When I started running the seti benchmark on the P4 rig inside it gradually rose to about 55F. That's the best it could do with 1 computer inside. Of course that helped some, but it's not like a Vapochill. Getting back to the walk in fridge - sure you could do it if you won the lottery. The power bill would be absurd.

Ok, I don't mean to get side track or anything, but have we established when the race will end? Is it going to be 7500 WUs or 15000 or by a date?

I say we make it a date this time. 7500 unit is going to go by pretty fast with our current output. Why not give it some time to make it more interesting?

edit: hahahaaa.....my 2.26b is baccccccccccccck!! all i did is swap my brand new 40G 120gxp from the old old WD 4.xG. "just" warming it up at 150FSB, will run it back to 2.75+G later  :D

And you have no idea how many gigs I had to play to get them.... Of course, my best vid card is a GF2GTS in my PIII. My Dell is running a GF2MX (just fine) and my Cel-T a Voodoo3 2000 PCI. That's my next upgrade. The image quality is perty durn good even in modern games, but the Cel-T deserves better. Between light gigging and mowing lawns, I'm set. I DO get an allowance, but it is not very much. I'd take a job but the amount of extracirricular playing groups I'm in is absurd... 4 nights a week taken by playing groups alone from 5:30-10 Monday-Thurs. That lightened up a bit over summer, but even then I helped out with a local summer band (teaching/playing/tutoring) and participated in State Honors Band Camp (standing 1st chair in State Honors Band, :D ) I could have possibly taken a summer job (but didn't), but during the school year, I don't know many employers who'd work around that schedule, except those who hire trumpet players that is.
Now you all know a bit about my life, lol.

Ahhh...Some people just have generous people around them. I don't care he uses them to crunch SETI for the races so who cares. All I can say is TEAM TC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WILL WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...least till school starts for horseman that is..........

The Indy 500 stops at 500, they don't decide at lap 50 to just keep on going until whenever. The winners celebrate the victory and the competitors move on to the next race, which has different dynamics, where anybody has the possibility to take the victory.
It was 7500 when we started, let's keep it that way. Stretching it out longer will give the Horsemen an even greater advantage, and once a team has proven their edge, the gaps will just grow wider, possibly causing some not on the winning team to lose interest.
Once some better production numbers are gathered from this race, I'd suggest another race with teams more accurately selected using actuals instead of guesstimates. When that one's over, repeat. That way the entire Overclockers Team has fun and keeps production up. That's the ultimate goal, isn't it?:burn:
That's fine, 7500 it will be. I think a few other people expressed a concern that member production is considerably higher than it was during the last race. Consequently the 7500 mark is going to come up much sooner and leave us with a relatively short race.
As for team selection, I'd hardly call it guessing. The daily output of each participant was taken from seti@work and our own daily stats update. With the exception of the Horsemen the spread is less than 30 wu's. I'd call that accurate myself. I don't think it would be an interesting race if it was less dynamic. It would be more like each of us taking a walk together than a race.

I could not have expressed it better myself. This time lets go to 7500. Next race maybe we can go for a month and see who wins at the end. There is nothing worse than not knowing what you are racing towards.
TC, I didn't say you were guessing and the last thing I want to do is offend you. The technical term is a SWAG (Scientific Wild Ass Guess) a.k.a. guesstimation.;) There are numbers behind what you had to do, but at some point, you had to take a leap from science to faith. I must say, you did a pretty good job, particularly when you consider what you get paid to do it.
Our output was averaging between 176 and 196 (Edit: I went back and looked at last weeks average -- 187.90), except for Monday where we upload a couple of desktops not connected full-time. If we weren't currently putting out in the 245 range, it wouldn't have been so close. Dell wants their stuff back, so we will probably start dropping back quickly once we can't hold them off any longer. I'm guesstimating we'll be giving up in the neighborhood of 350 WU's per week to you guys.
When you're cranking out as many WU's as we have been, it definitely makes team selection difficult. The dynamics are much different when more of the participants shoulder the load. It's definitely a daunting task trying to figure that one out. Maybe race fewer teams to a higher number?
I'm fine with just running to 7500. More races sound good to me. Keep the mix up. Just as long as we race! :)

OK I'll assume it's a race to 7500 WU then. I'd like to know so that I can plan a strategy accordingly, not that it matters much anyways, I'm just a small fish. But if we decide something else could someone please post it. THanks.

As I had some problems with my main rig (I think one of my memory sticks decided to die on me) and I was on vacation, my rig was off since Saturday, but I expect that the situation will be return to normal in this weekend.
So head Horsemen, we shall endure and in the end win!!!!!
