I just put seti on my computer, but I see that folding is very popular. Other than the purposes of each, are there any advantages of folding?? Should I switch?

Which Client do I download?:eh?:

I am running Seti, but I have done both, and will be doing some more folding soon :)

It depends on you: take a look at both projects, see which one appeals to YOU more and join the team and do it!

Both teams have great goals IMO, and both OC Teams have great people and some fun participating in their respective projects.

You can do both, but you really need a pc for each- Seti's client is more aggressive in seeking cpu cycles, and leaves very little for the Folding client.....I have tried just about everything to get them to "play nice together" and no luck :(

Either one you go with....Enjoy!

Folding@Home (http://folding.stanford.edu) helps Stanford cure horrible diseases like cancer and altzheimers. SETI (http://www.ocsetiteam.com) helps find sentient alien life which could be trying to contact us.

I think F@H is more practical now, and that SETI will be a better choice in a few decades. Personal opinion.

YOU should choose which one interests you the most, and become a part of that project. Nobody should tell you what your CPU is best for. It's YOUR CPU. =)

*cough* F@H *cough*

Well if your a sci-fi buff, searching for ET may be your thing, I think he exists but when HE wants to contact us, he will. On the other hand, folding helps us humans by searching for cures to diseases. To me, this is more important than the novelty of SETI. Plus, my daughter has a "protein" disorder and THAT is why I fold.;)

I am using the text version 3.11 (http://folding.stanford.edu/release/FAH3Console.exe)
or more info here (http://forum.oc-forums.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=108580)

Hope you decide to fold.

Are there any drawbacks to using the graphical client, opposed to using the text client. I personally like the graphical myself.

Other than that, I'm all set. Folding at this very moment.. Thanks for all the help.

The last time I heard (which admittedly was several years ago) the people at SETI had more than enough cpu's to process the data they are producing. In fact, they were making the program more complicated just to keep all the volunteer computers busy. Folding, on the other hand will need more computing power for a long time to come.

Glad to have you abord! The graphical client is slower IF you have it open cause the computer has to process the graphics, if it is minimized, it folds as fast as the text version (I think!).

As long as you keep the window minimized, they both work at the same speed. I use the graphical client myself. The only drawback I can think of is that the graphical client is a bit more of a hassle to upgrade when new versions come out (you have to uninstall the program rather than just replacing a file).
