View Full Version : Win98SE Cabs+WinXP Pro upgrade=possible?
I'm not quite sure how people use cabs files, so sorry for my lack of knowledge. :)
Anyway, is it possible to burn the win98se cabs and use a new winxp pro upgrade. Will it work? Is there a way to tell if the cabs are like the full version of win09se not just the upgrade, I'm curious since I have no actual OS boot cd.
Or: "Fool, it won't work, get yourself the FULL version!"
It should work. I install my upgrades of ME like that. I copy the cabs to a folder called 'cabs' on the C drive, then put my upgrade CD in. When it searches for a full install and doesn't find one, it asks for a cd. I just point it to the cabs, it finds what it needs, and installs! :)

u dont need any .cab files from an older copy of windows to use upgrade. its just a rumor.
i install upgrade edition on blank HDD's all the time.
the installer will simply ask u to insert an older copy of win to VERIFY u own it, it doesnt use any data off of the CD, period.
the only diff between regular and upgrade is the upgrades installer checks to see that u own an older copy of XP.
IMO a new OS using dated files is a silly idea. i really dont know where it came from. ive heard MCSE's say that cab files thing. its totally false:)

Yeah, I do. Half the time if I take the ME CD out of the drive to put my 98 CD in, when I have to put the ME CD back in, it won't read it.

why?
oh i see what your saying. wel with winME thats no surprise:)
ive done at least 30 XP installs (20 on my comp:O) and do the same thing every time. u can copy the whole win CD over to for the ckecking part, as long as u know it doesnt actually use any old files off the CD
Okay, to clarify... I want to get a spanking new hd, burn the win98se cabs on a cd (NOT save it on the same hd), install win98se from the cabs on the new hd, then install the winXP pro upgrade.
I don't plan to do this for a while anyway. :)
What I'd probably try to do is burn the cabs, try install win98se and if it works then grab the winXP pro upgrade. Or you guys are saying NOT to install win98 first?

alright, Heat,
just pop the XP CD onto the cdrom drive, with nothing on the HDD.
run the CD, and install XP. during the install, itll ask u to pop the CD in for just a second to verify that u own a previous copy of MS windows. thats it, it will format the drive to NTFS (or fat32 should u like, whioch i advise NOT to do, use NTFS) and install XP.
no cab file transfers at all, it just wants to check.
Awesome! Thanks!!!!! :D
PS, I checked the cabs folder and it totaled at about 180mb, I thought it would be much larger than this or it this normal?
