View Full Version : Artic Silver 3 and P4s
Yesterday i got a volcano 7+ and arctic silver 3.
Im running a P4 2.0 northwood @ 2.4 abit th711 512 Rdram.
Its been 12 hours since the application of the arctic silver and my cpu at idel is around 43.5 degress celcius.
Shouldn't my temps be lower or do i have to wait for a while before the temps start to drop.
PLus both the sides of the case or off.
Also would anyone know where i can get a program that monitors and graphs temps for the abit th711 mobo?

Your temps are good.Head over to the link for a bunch of different programs.Try MBM out.

No, that 43.5C is IDLE. I'd say that's quite high for my tastes. What are the load temps? That is what truly determines things. Make sure the ASIII is in a THIN layer. I put two pieces of scotch tape along either edge of a HS, then a dab of ASIII in the middle, then use a straightedge to smooth it out over the rest of the HS surface, but to each his own.
Also, it is late and I am tired, so I can't remember if the 7+ is the one with the variable speed fan... if it is, what do you have it set at?

your right jazzy it is a variable speed fan.... butstill 43 degrees celsius is too much! Evenm with the stock cooler your temps should be in the low-mid 30's! Check to make sure you put on the hsf correctly... double check your application of artic silver 3 and also tell us what motherboard you are using. Some motherboards have faulty temp sensors. Generally the Abit BD7II has been known to do this... and a whole buncha asus boards have this problem.

Are you running at the default voltage or did you pump it up? Voltage has a very big impact on the temps, especially w/ air cooling.

Guys, i had the same prob the very first day i installed the Volcano 7+ to my 1.8A...the diff is i used AA...the solution is to tight VERY hard the screws of Volcano's plates...the prob is that right now the cpu-Volcano contact is not that firm...just tight the bloody screws and everything will be just fine...
Oh, tell me how many minites it will take you to UNINSTALL Volcano cause it seems i ve got the record...(15 minutes and i had to unscrew the mobo from the case...).
Take a look...here! (http://forum.oc-forums.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=113768)
thanks for the response :)
The cpu in the bios has been bumped from 1.5 to 1.525 volts.
My motherboard is the Abit TH711 with the latest bios from the site dating around a 2- 3 months back.
My room does get hot in summer (its the hottest room in the house) but we r in winter and its around maybe 20c which isn't hot.
My load temps seem to get around 52 top but my idle temps from what i have heard around here should be around 30, i think.
My motherboard at idle is around 23c. @ load not sure but i think the mobo is cool enough.
Regarding the speed i set the volcano 7+, HIGH :)
Tommorrow im getting 3 18cm case fans. 1 fan moves 108 cfm :)
If that doesn't cool this pc down i down know what will.
I seem to get good scores with 3D mark. with my Leadtek geforce 4 ti4600 ultra i get around 12K with no overclocking the video.
Guys, what can i do???
:eh?: :eh?:

My bad,I thought that was under load in which case 43C would be not bad at all.Underload like prime95 you would be talkin over 50C.The AS3 should be applied thin like paint.I used a razor blade at an angle to get a nice thin spread.I never tried a Volcano 7+ so I can't comment on it.I know somo mobo's report high temps.I seen guys get real high temps no matter what they did around 60C.I read certain abit boards where bad for misreading temps. One guy figured his was off 10-12C it was that bad.If you have a good case cooling,HS & Fan and you applied AS3 properly than I wouldn't worry about it.I use an Alpha 8942 with a 2900 RPM fan 24DBA sucking and my temps are 30-32C and around 40C under load.I don't need a big loud fan.I like to keep things quite.I have good case cooling and AS3.
lol if its the fact that i somehow didn't screw together properly the volcano 7+.
I know excatly what that guy ment when he said that the assembly of the HSF is *****.
Basically the screws don't fit nor do they line up correctly they gave me another 7 or so screws so i could pick out which ones fitted. Its sad if u think about it, a volcano 7+ is nearly the king of HSF and when its made so poor it get thinkin if 70 bucks was a little too high.
But if it works u won't hear a peep out of me

My Alpha 8942 bolts down to the Mobo. Its a perfect fit and everything lines up.I had to screw it down until the screws didn't turn no more. The springs kind of prevent you from over tightening. You don't want to put to much force though. My opinion is the Alpha 8942 is every bit as good as the Volcano 7+ at less cost.

guys actually the best heatsink for the pentium 4 is the thermalright ax-478 followed by the thermaltake volcano 7+ then the swiftech (i forget the model but you know the one everyone's got :D) And then your poor little alpha last ride.

Gee,..... another Volcano 7+ victims.
My Volcano 7+ is now rest in piece inside my drawer. Very difficult to remove and the temp. is not low enough as advertised.
The problem is the metal bars that bolts together with copper base. The metal bars actually "hit" or "touch" the four white dots on the rectangular HSF socket on motherboard. Consequently, the bottom plate has NO perfect contact with CPU. It is slightly tilted. Can you RMA this craps?

seriously asw you'd think by now they'd figure it out right! ;) :p
Darryl so it is too hot? my system?

i would say so! WHen you say idle you mean that your system has been on for 12 hours but you haven't been on it? Meanikng the computer was on but you weren't doing anything? If that's the case then no your system is just at the right temp... but if by idle you mean that your system has been off all night... you turn it on and then in 10 minutes the temp is at 43 degrees celsius... then yes something is wrong! First see if you can RMA that thermaltake for a thermalright... with a good sunon fan... Next add a couple of case fans (i like to add 3 2 intake and 1 exhaust) but that is only if your case can support it... right now i'd say two is fine... and then recheck your temps.... BTW recheck the heatsink too see if it's mounted correctly
Thanks Darryl.
i just turned on my PC around 2 minutes ago and my cpu is @ 41c. Mobo = 21c.
The thing is that even it i don't overclock the cpu it still runs around 40 and this was like this from day 1. Could the room temps affect the temperature of the cpu that much?
HAHAHHAHAHA
Darryl just read your rig. like the intel chip in the AMD system :)
