View Full Version : Best router for dsl?
Now that I have cash burning a hole in my pocket Ive decided my next wise purchase should be a router for my dsl, I am sick of using software internet sharing, lol.
Plus this would come in handy when friends come over for a lan party so we all can use the internet to get patches and such.
I have a 24 port switch that I will be using with the router (got the switch for a steal of a deal :D). Can someone point me in the direction of a good model of router? My spending limit is around um... $100 or $125 or so.

LinkSys makes some good routers for nice prices. They cost about $120 or $130 Canadian so I'm sure it's in your price range.

ive been looking at that one
http://www.smc.com/index.cfm?sec=Products&pg=Product-Details&prod=67&site=c#images
does it have the same features and firewall features as some of the linksys ones? like this one for example
http://www.linksys.com/products/product.asp?grid=23&prid=433
Edit: and can you configure it the same way?
Edit#2: And could i connect that to my switch and have all the computers access the internet and print though the switch?

That Linksys dosen't have NAT or Network Address Translation.
You want NAT over VPN as NAT is alot more secure.
with NAT your pc's IPs are private that the internet cannot see or connect to unless you let them. they can hit the router but your comps are safe. think of it liek this...
You send out information along path A
Information comes back and the router knows to send it down path B back to your computer
Someone on the internet tries to get to your computer and runs into the NAT. Since your computers didn't inniate the router sees nowhere to send the incomming information and drops it.
VPN while I don't have the xact definition at the moment dosen't provide that sort of security..
I will always pick NAT over VPN... VPN isn't even a selling point for me

SMC7004FW - Barricade™ Plus Cable/DSL Broadband Router
This model has SPI and probably costs a bit more. Mine is the old version of
SMC7004ABR - Barricade™ 4-Port 10/100Mbps Broadband Router
This is the least you will want. its got everything you would need, easy to setup with a web interface. when I recently moved and changed from DSl to cable.. totally different networks.. I got the cable installed.. pluged the barraciade intot he cable modem.. plugs in my boxes and booted up and it automaticly found the dhcp settings from the cable company and assigned IP's to my comps.. I was sorta surprised myself that I didn't have to reset a single setting.. everything happened automaticly.
Very pleased with this router and highly recomend it for the first time or expert network person who dosen't want alot of hassle with setting up a network or adding machiens at a later date.
Does the plus version have the print server built into it as well?
