View Full Version : Thermal take Volcano 9
Well I just ordered one becuase cpu running a bit warm @ 46c idle:) .
Anyways.. I was looking for opinions on people who own volcano 9. What where you using before? And how does it compare?
Personally I plan on running it at full speed. The noise I can deal with. The high cpu temps I cannot

I do not own a Volcano 9, however, this (http://www.overclockers.com/articles373/) page will help you see how it compares to the competition.

I have one on my desk but sadly I never used it. I watercool.
i don't find it to be really good... :(

Sorry to say, I don't either. But on the bright side, it's a good fan.
Well i picked up the volcano 9 and i think it rocks. I run mine at 4300rpm's and the computer idles at 104F which is 40C. At load it maxes at about 110F, not sure Celcius.
Max speed on volcano9 runs at 5300rpm's. Its very loud at that speed. However it idles at 100F. I have a kingwin alluminum case, but it does not have a side panel fan. When i pulled the side panel off it was actually running at 95F idle. However the motherboard temps rose with the panels off. MB temps usually run at 84-86F idle, but with the panel off it jumped to 89-91. Seemed a little wierd, but oh well.
My old temps with a Volcano 6 heatsink and fan was 115-117F idle (side panel off) and around 120-125F under full load. So basically now under full load, the cpu runs 5F cooler than at lowest idle temps did with the old volcano 6. Mind you i switched from a standard ATX case with 1 exhaust fan (side panel always off) and a volcano 6@4500rpms, to a kingwin case (2 intake in front, 2 exhaust in back, and 1 blowhole up top) and a volcano 9@4300rpms.

volcano 7+ maxes at 6500+ rpm

thats high for a volcano 9 gzr4d. my volcano7 idles at 40c running at 2500rpm, which is silent compared to your 4300rpm monster. it'll go down to 35-36c at 4000rpm,but i dont run it that hard
alpha pal8045 still rules. ^_^
Thanks for the replies....
Well seems like some mixed opinions but regardless Im sure it will perform better then my Volcano 6. Im hoping for atleast a 3-5deg Celsius drop.

Well, if you have already ordered one, the only thing left is to try it and tell us what sort of temps your getting. To get the most out of it, you should use Artic Silver III instead of the thermal compound that comes with it.
I was using Artic Silver 2. I'm not sure if that makes a difference between using Artic Silver 3. Also i don't have a side fan, i know for a fact that would lower cpu temps a lot, and i don't have a second fan on my power supply which would also lower temps a little.
If i were to add the side fan and get a PS with the second fan would i notice a big change in cpu temps? Also my computer sits on a carpeted floor. I'm not sure if that makes a difference as well.

Or just use a Volcano 7+ and the Smart Fan II.

Adding a side fan makes a huge difference! It has made such a big difference in all of my cases, that I went and bought a 4 3/4 inch hole saw and I put 120mm sunon fans in all of my computers. This usually dropped my cpu temperatures from 46-50 to 36-40!

i use the original Volcano 7 with a whisper 80mm panaflo and keeps my XP1600@1.680Ghz nice and cool at 35c idle and 41c max load

what other fans do you have, equalizr? that seems way too low for volcano with a 24cfm fan on it

volcano 9 has a high air flow and I believe it max out higher than that of the volcano 7+. the thing I hate abt the volcano 9 is that it regulates its fan speed based on temperature. I wonder if this will hinder efficiency of the air cooling
Volcano 9 actually has 3 different settings. One is the auto regulate setting. It changes based on tempature. The second is full power setting. Its on max speed all the time. The 3rd is a manually adjustable setting. You plug in a rotary style switch and can change the speed to whatever you like.
Well I have the new fan installed and @ idle the temp is 43-44c, and under load its around 50c. So it helped for about 2deg idle and 3-4deg under load. I was hoping for better then this. These temps are with the side off and a 14 inch turbo fan blowing into the case. With the side on my temp is @ 55c idle .
BTW this thing is pretty noisy.
I cannot understand why this cpu runs so damn hot. Its gonna cost me 300 dollars to get a new case and 27 more fans to cool this thing off.

Mine needed some serious lapping - Have you tried that? Might help a little.
Hi robin - mine was really 'circled' pretty un-even, haven't lapped it yet tho.

2 80mm panaflo whisper intake, 1 low profile panaflo 80mm on backside of GPU, 80mm panaflo whisper on my V7 heatsink and 1 80mm panaflo whisper exhaust.
and all are hooked up to rheostats :) everythings nice and cool and quiet:D
