I have a 1700+. I got it up as high as 145fsb without much work. I was wondering if it would be worth it to unlock the multiplier? It is a AGKA-Y week 36 and will probably not go much higher. Would it be better to sell this one and get a 1600+ from newegg and unlock it? How risky is unlocking one of these? Will I see a real difference in performance?
Risky? No I think the worst that can happen is that you fail to suceed it and it just won't be able to bootup so you clean it off and it'll bootup again. Unlocking is definitely worth it. You're able to bump the FSB as high as possible when it's unlocked and FSB clocks everything such as, ram, and PCI Bus so you'll know a huge difference. Your AGKGA won't be able to clock that high anymore since AGKGA was the first stepping :( If you can sell the chip and buy a 1600+ at Newegg then it's definitely worth a short whereas you'll get much higher on the 1600+ than the 1700+ and it'll be much more fun to play with ;)

That's exactly what I did. I "downgraded" from a XP1700+ that would only go upto 1650MHz (11x150) to a XP1600+ that I can run as high as 1881MHz stable.
Sell your XP1700+ and buy a xp1600 from newegg and enter a whole new world of overclocking.

Right now I am running at about 1550mhz. Will I be able to tell a difference with a chip that does over 1700mhz? Thanks!
