Hi,
I was wonderinbg what you all think of Intel's new processor's 2.6, 2.66, and the 2.8ghz processors and what you think they can be overclocked to. Also, is there a 3.0ghz processor I'm not sure because I havent seen them anywhere yet. I'm asking these questions because I'm thinking about buying one of them or if I would be better of buying a cheaper 2.26ghz processor and overclocking that.
Thanks A Lot,
Andy

wow Mr. CPU that system you want to make (ya know your FUTURE SYSTEM from your siggy) that looks really cool! But it's going to cost you an arm and a leg to get! Personally if your giong to spend all that money on comp hardware parts why not spring in an extra $100 and get Windows XP home edition? or you could get the upgrade for like $50 (cause i think win 98 can be upgraded to xp hmmmm...)
Secondly i've enver heard of a 2.6 and 2.66ghz processor from intel.... i do know that intel has just released the 2.8ghz processor... and i think the next one they release will be the 3ghz processor but i am unsure....
Well myu speculation is that the 2.8 and 3.0ghz processors WILL NOT overclock well... The reason i think this is because they have really high multipliers! (2800/133 =21.05x multiplier and 3000/133=22.556x multiplier) so think of the 2.8 like a 2.0a (sort of cause that has a 20x multiplier while the 2.8 has a 21) the 2.0a's could barely overclock to 2.6ghz! Think of the 3ghz as a 2.2a (sa the multipliers are the same for them) and from what i've seen those things could only overclock 400mhz more!
First there is a 2.53 but not 2.6.
All of those you listed have been known to reach 3Ghz. The 2.26 is able to, but its alittle trickier, and your going to need some good RAM. The 2.8 is not even out yet, but vendors are already selling it or at least advertising; so there is no 3Ghz yet. Probably around December it will appear. Have you checked the data base on the main page to see what people have gotten them to. Not too many own them yet, but there should be some listings.
There will be a 2.8/133 a 2.66/133 a 2.6/400 and a 2.5/400 released anytime soon now. Monday I guess. There are a few pics here (http://akiba.ascii24.com/akiba/news/2002/08/24/638107-000.html)
From what I have "heard", the 2.66 and 2.8 are hitting 3.3-3.5 on air. There seems to be some dispute over whether these are actually C1 steppings or "just" die-shrunk B0's. Personally I'm convinced at least the 2.8 shown is a C1's (as the default Vcore is 1.525V). I've ordered one of these 2.8's myself, so now I'll just have to wait it out. I live in Europe and for some reason we seem to get the new cpu's later than everybody else

we'll have to wait and see how well they overclock since very little is known about their abilities at this point. the 2.26b should be very inexpensive (relative to the 2.66 - 2.8) after labor day so i'd wait a week before buying one, and yes, i think that is going to be the best chip to get in the most bang-for-the-buck dept. unless the 1.8a drops to $90 - $110:D
