Hey, im just making a new pc. I haven't put the "bits" in yet (just the case and fans at the moment), but reading the cooling- a definative guide it seems i may have a potential problem and would like to smooth it out before i complete the system!!
on the back i have my psu with fan, an 80mm case fan and a system exhaust blower, and on the side is a 80mm exhaust fan. On the front i only have 1 80mm case fan and heard you could get intake fans to go into the 5 1/4 bays, and was looking at getting one if i could. Will this create a problem, having much more air out than in? also, where can i put new fans, as there's no more room in the front!!!!!
Thank-you for taking the time to listen to this newbie- Please help!!!!!!
Thanks, js.

it shouldnt be a problem having more air going in than going out, youll just have a slightly positive case pressure...which is something there have been MANY arguments over, some people say neutral pressure is best, others say positive is better, and some (including me) feel that negative case pressure is best, but iit shouldnt make that much of a difference either way, also if you want more fans...the top of the case is a good idea, as is the bottom, or left side ;) GL with the computer, post some temps when shes finished

Whether having more air in than out is an arguable topic. Some prefer more air in and some prefer more air out; it's basically personal preference. A general consensus is to have the same amount in and out.
IMO, small fans in the 5 1/4 bay area aren't very useful. Unless you modified two bays and put a 80mm fan in there, small fans are too weak to give you much performance gain. What I'll probably do in your case is first switch the side 80mm exhaust around and have it as an intake, blowing on top of the CPU and motherboard. Keep the 80mm exhaust at the upper back and the 80mm intake in the lower front. Then I'll probably modify my case to have a top blowhole.
With this setup, you'll have good cooling and a good balance of intake/exhaust. But different people prefer different cooling setups, so surf around the internet and get some ideas.
Have fun! :D

This may be a little techinal but it does wonders when you finally do it...
I say cut out a 80mm x 80mm hole above the CPU and then turn the Fan on the heatsink so it blows out of the hole...that should lower your temps by up to 5C!!! It worked for me and was quite easy...Thing is that you need to have eithor a dremel/hole saw/jigsaw to do this...and make sure they have strong blades so they don't break while you useing them....
Hope this helps

thanx, p.s. how do u switch the fan around so it is an intake instead of exhaust?
(soz for these silly newbie q's!!)

I have a few general rules I go by for case cooling:
Intake low in front, exhaust high in back.
Equal amount of air in and out.
Mod the case: most cases do not provide enough cooling- 2 80mm intake and 2 80mm exhaust is NOT enough case cooling for an Overclocked AMD cpu (unless its a K6 :) )
Cardboard is great as temporary panels to find the ideal locations for fans
Bigger fans are better
Mod the case (Yes, its on here twice;) )
Case cooling is tricky because no two systems are exactly alike:
Spec_Ops2087 mentioned turning the fan the other way and ducting it out of the case- I know a number of people who have done this with great results. It always makes things worse for me though.
My point is you will need to experiment and find what works BEST for you.

Oh, you just flip it around. Some fans have arrows to show you the direction the fan is blowing, but you could just turn it on and test it. BTW, the top blowhole should be an exhaust to get rid of the hot air.
just turn the fan around. all fans blow towards the label side.

Thanx 4 all the help!
Only thing is, i'm changing my case so i'll either start a new topic and ignore this one or delete this 1, thanx 4 the help but PLEASE don't post more help on this thread, 'cos it won't help on my existing case and my new case is prob gonna be quite differant- maybe even a full tower.
Thanks for all the help, look out for new thread coming soon!!!!!!!
