View Full Version : How do I get from 156 to 166, Don't want to corrupt HDD

Hey there,

I've gotten my AMD 1700+ up to 1716mhz. The FSB was set at 156. 156/4 = 39, the maximum speed that Emerica said that you should go with on your HDD. I was able to run Prime95 for four minutes with no errors until I turned it off because my temps were hitting 57C. Bad cooling, I know. I'm going to have to work on this...thinking about a Volcano 9...currently have a CoolerMaster DP5 6131C...but I also have to improve my case temps.

But I'm wondering how I can get to the magical 166 FSB so the 1/5 divider kicks in. Do you just keep creeping up from 156? I've tried jumping to 166, but haven't increased the voltage enough to get a good boot off of it. (Screen was getting artifacts). I playing it careful here, don't want to fry my cpu yet.

What do you guys suggest I do?

Thanks...

Well, correct me if I'm wrong but I thought that all KT333 boards have at least a 1/5 Divider.

The highest FSB I could achieve in RAID0 was 153MHz. I found out the hard way that anything over 153MHz ment all heck going loose for my hard drives.

To get 166MHz, you simply select the 166MHz / 33MHz PCI in the bios. If you dont got this option then you aint going to be running at 166MHz especially with PCI speeds of 44MHz.

Hedonblue. I think the reason your system has a hard time at 166fsb is because of your CPU. You're running a XP1700+ and at the 11x stock multi, 166fsb would mean 1826mhz, which is a very huge o/c for a XP1700+. Something I haven't seen on air, especially with your temps being that high.

You'll have a much better chance of hitting 166fsb if you lowered your multiplier.

What you're telling me is correct, but i'm trying to find the highest FSB I can go with. Right now, my max is 156, because I don't want to move that up to 157 because thats going to make everything else run at 39.25MHz. As I understood it, the only way that the 1/5 divider kicks in, is when you reach a 166mhz fsb...I don't have the option to change my divider in my BIOS.

So, I was wondering, when you reach 156 for the FSB, and you're trying to find out how high it can go, do you continue on to 157, 158, 159 etc? Or do you bypass all those and jump to 166 so you can get the 1/5 divider.

Thanks

BTW, I know my temps are bad, but I'm still working on those....right now i'm at 46C idle...I plan to get another case fan...and eventually, I'll probably replace the heatsink, but actually, this is my parents computer i'm upgrading, and they probably aren't going to care if its 100 mhz faster, so I might just keep the lower clock speeds to keep the temps down, right now tho...i'm just trying to see what i can get this puppy to do.

I was sitting here reading these posts, and thinking about it...and I think I understand what you're trying to tell me now...

people don't overclock the way I'm doing it...instead, they lower the multiplier so they can raise the FSB to a 1/5 divider level...correct here?

so, in that case, i'm gonna have to give this unlocking thing a shot...i'm going to have to do i the 'hard' way right? no pencil tricks for me i guess...

well, anyway, thanks for your help

Yea, try the 166MHz thing and use Sandra2002 to see whether the 1/5 divider kicked in. Sandra tells all :)
