View Full Version : Motherboard Advice Again !!!

I have been reading and its almost too much. Its seems that the motherboard features I am looking for aren't discussed that much. I don't see many folks going for the 850e and RDRAM (understand this is the best for a video editing rig, is this true). I thought I had found my motherboard of choice with the Asus P4T533, but then I was checking it out further and found this www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=MzM3LDY=, scarry!

So here is my question ...

Can you guys comment on these boards?

Gigabyte GA-8IHXP
Asus P4T533-C
MSI 850E Max

I, by no means, can call myself an overclocker, I am more like an overclocker wannabe, but I might dig in the BIOS down the road.

Thanks for your time!

Look into AMD systems.. alot cheaper then P4's and more ppl here use AMD then Intel (least from what I have observed)

My main system I use for games and workign on projects for my Media Arts and Animation major is on an AMD system

This is an example fo my confusion. After reading this I started to look for info on why everyone seems to go AMD. I can't seem to find the article or review that says this is the move to make. For example I immediately found this www.extremetech.com/article2/0,3973,477743,00.asp

All of this is both frustrating and exciting, I can find one article or post that says one thing and find something that seems to say exactly the opposite.

The article mentioned above seem to downplay AMD because of the underlying "infrastructure". Yet I can find another article that says Intel is moving away form RDRAM even though it seems prime for the P4.

As I said before those "Content Creation" benchmarks catch my eye the most and for this reason I asumed that for me the 850e was the way to go. Has anyone found a score that has a AMD DDR setup beating a P4 RDRAM setup for this?

I play games to but will I really get killed if I have a 150fps situation instead of a 225 one?

I really enjoy this learning process, but I am starting to drown here. Can someone help guide me here. There is even a thread in here that talks about how Tom's Hardware site is full of crap.

I am hoping that you guys can talk about how you assess and wade through all the noise that is out there, what do you take seriously and what do you ignore?

Why AMD over Intel for a "Content Creation" box?

You will find as many people applauding AMD as Intel in this forum. Some applications run a little faster on AMD than Intel and vice versa. I think most people that use AMD are people that want a lower cost computer. The ones that use Intel want to have Mhz bragging rights, hang the cost.

I have used both AMD and Intel for graphics work... I seriously doubt you will even notice a difference unless you are doing some massive projects that give your cpu an apoploxy(sp?)

current AMD's apparently surpass current Intels for 90% of their functions till you get into SSE and advanced memory functions.

I say just buy what works for you pricewise and you most likely wont really notice any difference

Thanks for the advice!

I hate to admit it and I still haven't figured it out, buy I am more of a bragging rights kind of guy. I hope to use the machine primarily to do video editing. THere is nothing like waiting for Primere to render the final product. I just want as much raw speed as I can get. Since I am cannibalizing my old machine to a great extent, I can deal with the extra cost.

The things I have learned though researching this has just been great, again, thanks for your help.

if you are going for the 850e chipset go for the Asus P4T533-C. Although i'm an Intel addict i can say that it is very worth it to look at the prices for an AMD motherboard and chipset and comparing it to the Intels (compare prices of a 2600+ to a 2.53Ghz intel). 850e motherboards are very expensive.
Current Intel motherboards will be obsolete when 3ghz chipsets come out very soon, and i've heard AMD will be changing to new motherboards too very soon (i think this is true).

Socket A will work with Barton and T-Bred, and then they switch to 754 pins with the Hammer, and 940 pins with the Opteron.
Maybe my sources are wrong?? (http://users.erols.com/chare/786.htm)

You will be spending $170+ for the Asus P4T533-C (or other 850e motherboard, which will be obsolete for upgrade within a few months) and also a lot on 4200 RDRAM (Intel may decide to just use DDR soon). At the moment it seems AMD is the way to go, or just to wait for Intel to bring out the new motherboard.

Or wait for nForce 2,

Unfortunately I really can't wait. I have to pull the trigger soon.

After reading Penguin's response I found around 4 different artricles that had the P4 850e beating AMD on the Content Creation Winstone. This goes back to my earlier request on how to digest all of this stuff.

If you can give me some suggestions on what to consider AMD wise. I have only owned Intel processors. I will work on some side by side pricing in the meantime and continue to read.

BTW does the Asus P4T533-C suffer from the same mess discussed here: www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=MzM3LDY=

For AMD, use the XP Series processors, instead of Thunderbird, or T-Bird processors(Video Editing.....dual maybe?) Which Premiere are you running?

No, the new C version is very stable and hasn't got these problems. But, if you are gonna be overclocking the Abit TH7II-RAID is your best bet.
